The film shows us the deep value of hope as a motivator for change. Without hope we see a society in chaos and decay with little human drive to improve the world. Part of the malaise is the hopelessness that invades each layer of society and the basic human empathy is lacking. Our protagonist, Theo, acts as a vehicle for the important of hope - we see how hope amongst hopelessness is not only possible but the only way we will be able to effect any positive shifts in society. The world of the novel closely resembles our own contemporary (present) world and this was done consciously to bring this valuable message home to the viewer.

In "Children of Men," Alfonso Cuarón paints a grim picture of a world plagued by infertility and social decay. Through this dystopian lens, he prompts viewers to contemplate the consequences of neglecting societal issues such as political unrest, environmental degradation, and the erosion of empathy. Cuarón masterfully conveys the notion that hope can emerge even in the darkest of times, urging us to reflect on our own roles in shaping the future of our planet and the well-being of future generations.

I think the film has painted the surrounding environment in a way where everything seems hopeless, that at every turn it always gets worse. But a character who showed it is still possible to hold out hope in such a hopeless world is Julian. In contrast to her surroundings and other characters, Julian seems like a breath of fresh air. Despite going through such a traumatic event which would leave anyone in a hopeless state, she rose above it started to lead a political group fighting the humanity towards fugees. In comparison to Theo who also suffered the traumatic event who, instead of holding out hope for themselves like Julian did, he disassociated himself from everyone and everything, he became numb to the world. Julian plays the perfect role in showing that there can still be hope in a hopeless world. I believe the it was the directors intention create Julians character in this way.

I think that the director is trying to make us think about, our world and how our collective hope plays a huge part in it. In our world whilst hope as an individual may be lost hope as a collective is impossible to whip out, as there will always be people like Jasper, who will keep on to their hope even when all seems lost. The start of the film shows the biggest collective loss of hope with the death of baby Diego, here we see people who clung on to baby Diego as the last line of hope lossing it. And yet this is not the end hope still lives on with Jasper, the fishes, the human project and with Kee. The ships name from the human project is called "The Tomorrow" this name represents the hope of people who are still looking forward, still trying, still beliving. The fact that a tomorrow even exists is enough to bring hope to these people. The director here is trying to show us that even if our world looks bleak and horrible, there will be no change, no tomorrow, unless we have hope. hope that things will improve and that the end is not near. Hope that we as a species will make it through.

I think a good example of this is Theo, at the start of the film he is a depressed drunk adult, who is mainly only interested in the money he is being given, and getting back together with his ex wife, however as soon as Kee's pregnancy is revealed his true feelings are revealed and he becomes a activist once again as he tries to do everything in his power to get Kee and her baby to the human project. Another example of this is the refugees, fishes, and the military in the final scene, how before seeing the baby they are fighting and trying to kill each other, but after seeing the baby there is a brief moment of peace as everyone is listening to the sound of a crying baby for the first time in 18 years.

I think the director is trying to highlight the innocence and new perception of the world that children bring. As we grow up, we tend to fall into patterns established by the generations before us and start seeing the world in black and white. Children see the world without the bias and prejudice, and offer a kind of hope only children can produce. In the film, the adults are shown to follow similar patterns; they either listen to the government's propaganda or attempt to rebel using violence and cruelty to achieve their goals. Shown by Theo, human instinct is to protect and shield children, in fear of taking away their greatest power - their innocence. The innocence of a child is shown especially during the birth and war scene, where the baby's cry silences the sound of war. Cuaron even compares Kee's child to an angel, using light and angelic sound to highlight how important children are to our society and how easily it crumbles without them.

I think that Alfonso Cuarón was trying to emphasize hope and show how the need for it is universal. The director showed the audience through the humanization of all character groups (even the ones the audience disagreed with), that nobody is actually evil. Rather, they respond to a confronting situation differently due to their differing experiences. By understanding this, the audience can reflect on how everybody is reacting based on the same emotions (fear, sadness, hopelessness). Everybody is equally terrified, and acting because of it. Hope is the one thing that can cause change universally.

Through its carefully crafted visual style, the film immerses the audience in a world overwhelmed by fear and hopelessness. Using long tracking shots, muted color palettes, and stark urban landscapes, Cuarón visually conveys the despair of a society on the brink of collapse. Yet amid this darkness, the film also explores themes of hope and renewal, highlighting the human capacity for compassion and survival. By analysing these visual techniques, we can better understand how Children of Men communicates complex ideas about humanity and our response to crisis.

Despite the overwhelming bleakness, the film powerfully explores the theme of hope as a force that drives characters to continue fighting for a better future. Through the use of contrasting visuals—such as moments of light breaking through darkness—and the development of key characters like Theo and Kee, the film reveals how hope becomes a catalyst for change. This theme encourages viewers to consider the importance of hope in sustaining humanity even when all seems lost.

As the story unfolds, his encounter with Kee, a miraculously pregnant woman, forces him to confront his fears and reclaim his sense of responsibility. Theo’s transformation—from cynicism to sacrifice—mirrors the film’s key themes of hope and redemption amid despair.

I think the movie is a lesson about selflessness. The bleakest parts of the movies are when we are shown the ways that people take advantage of others, ignore their needs. We see this sort of behavior with the Fishes, the police and military, and with characters such as Nigel and Sid. These people lack empathy, and refuse to help others, or never try to make a change.

Hope only shines through when selfless people, including Theo, put their lives on the line for the wellbeing of the baby, with the hope for a better future.

Directors Purpose and Theme

In Children of Men, director Alfonso Cuarón illustrates hope within a seemingly hopeless world through small, human moments rather than grand victories; for example, he frames the birth of the first child in nearly two decades not as a dramatic spectacle, but as a quiet, fragile miracle that briefly silences violence and unites people across divides, showing that even in decay and despair, life and connection remain powerful forces. Cuarón created the film to hold a mirror up to contemporary society, warning against the dangers of political oppression, and the erosion of human rights, while also challenging audiences to recognize that hope does not require a perfect future, but rather the courage to keep going and protect what matters most. This ties directly to the film’s central theme: that hope is not the absence of despair, but the choice to act with compassion and purpose even when outcomes are uncertain, reminding viewers that humanity’s greatest strength lies in our ability to care for one another, no matter how dark the world becomes.

I think that the directors purpose was specifically about hope, because hope is a mindset and I think that he was trying to show us that even in hopeless situations there is still hope, because as long as you have a positive mindset you can chose whether you want to be hopeful or not
