When Missouri wanted to become a state which messed up the balence of slave and free state.. This caused tension to be raised as many do not want missouri to be a state. It could have also led to A slave state to have more representation.

Protective Tariff (1828)

The north liked Protective Tariffs because they had factories and could make money, The south didnt like it because it would raise the prices of manufactured goods. South Carolina got very angry that it was passed

Nullification Crisis (1828-1832)

It claimed it was state right to nullify a law though specific convention. It threatened the unity of the US and the rights of the supreme court. congress passed another Tariff in 1832 which SC Nullifyed. John C. C. steped down as vice presedent to senater. Andrew Jackson urged congress to pass a forced bill in order to send troops to collect the tariff.

The treaty of Guadalupe-hidalgo gave western land to us. made manifest destiny. The debate over slave/free states start with the discovery of gold in California.

Compromise of 1850

California entered as a free state, slave trade outlawed in DC, organise the remaining land ceceded from mexico into two large territores (Utah and New Mexico) let ppl live there by popular soversty. pay texas $10 million for giving up some land to New Mexico. Strenthen the exsisting FSA.

Uncle Toms Cabin (1852)

Written in responce to the FSL. Increased sympathy for FS. Second most popular book. Southerners were outraged by its "exagerations" about slavery.

Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)

Demands to orginise western land as a result of the gold rush, land from MA war, and westward expansion. The goverment wanted to create a Trans-contineltal railroad connecting East and West. Notherners wanted a route through Nebraska, Southerenrs wanted a southern route through Texas. The Missouri comp. was replaced with popular sovereignty.

Bleeding Kansas (1856)

Northern abolitionists and southern slave-holders moved to Kansas. The began to fight over Popular Sover. The Republician party was formered.

Dred Scott Decision (1857)

He was a slave taken into free territory. Felt that since he was in free land he was free and sued to maintain freedom. Supreme court says that "African Americans are not citizens and cannot sue the court" Went on to say he was property and can be taken anywhere. The court also said the KN Act was unconstitutional because it deined owners from taking their "property" where they wanted to.

John Brown’s Raid (1859)

John Brown, A white man, wanted to arm slaves for a slave rebellion. Failed Miserably, and made more sectionalism. Southerners were scared of freed slaves and abolitionsists.

Election of 1860

Prompted SC to leave the union. Abraham campained on a platform of 'free soil', which was an idea that slavery should NOT be allowed to expand into other territores. Abraham was called a 'free-soiler'. He won the election from the Northern votes. After he won the election SC signed the Articals of Ordinaces. Many other states signed after that.

Theory of Secession (1860)

Comes from state rights. The USA has a confederation of states, not a union. Says that states have more power than the federal gov.
