When USSR started to have a rather relaxed attitude towards the USA, China started to see it as rather dangerous, leading to political enemity between the two. This was due to a divergence in the communist ideology.

Different leaders have different perspectives. When there is a change in leadership, the way the other person leads will the state will be different from the former leader.
When Khrushchev had come to power, his perspective of leading the state was different from Stalin's. During his time period as USSR's premier, he criticized Stalin's leadership and the mistakes the latter had made. He introduced a new foreign policy of Peaceful Co-existence and this foreign policy was not accepted by China.
Mao saw this new foreign policy as Soviet Revisionism or distancing away from Marxist-Leninist ideology.
And this is why the Sino-Soviet relations became hostile.
There was also a clash of personalities between Mao and Khrushchev and therefore, they sort of had a personal rivalry.
Ex: Mao invited Khrushchev to a swimming pool for a meeting knowing that Khrushchev did not know how to swim and because Mao himself was a great swimmer.

Domino effect can be seen here.

The source of communism is not monolithic.

Proletarian Revolution - working class revolution
USSR's proletariat - industrial workers
China's proletariat - peasants
