The song All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey is spoken by Carey herself. At the time of the song's creation, Carey was in a bad and loveless marriage with her then husband Tommy Mottola. From my analysis of this song, I have determined that the audience of this beautiful song is herself. She is telling herself that she is all she needs, and she especially doesn't need a man to be happy. The purpose of this song is to cheer herself up and to almost motivate her to get out of her marriage with her eventual divorce from Mottola in 1998, just four years after the song was released. The subject of this song should, in some ways, be obvious with it containing the name "Christmas" in the title and the repeated Christmas-themed verses contained within the song, but if you haven't gotten it is Christmas with some love mixed in there. The song itself contains a happy, cheery tone with the fast tempo of the song and the fun additive of bell chimes.

Lyric example #1: “Santa Clause won’t make me happy with a toy on Christmas Day”. This example explains that she is in a spot where she is not happy; additionally, she knows she can't be made happy with a toy/present. This ties back to her bad marriage where she has felt unhappy for most of the marriage. The example itself does execute its job of her knowing she won't be happy unless she gets what she wants.

Lyric example #2: “All I Want for Christmas is you”. This shows that she only wants you which I refer you back to the audience of this song which is herself. With this lyric, she is saying that she is no longer herself and she wants her old self back.

Lyric example #3: “Santa, won't you bring me the one I really need?”. She's exclaiming that she knows what she needs and she's wishing that she gets it. During the creation of the song, Carey must have been in a really dark place, and she was hoping that she soon would be released from the darkness of the marriage and be free with herself. She knows that the old Mariah would never let the things happening to her current self happen, so if she gets her old self back, then she will be free from her toxic marriage.

Lyric example #1: “I just want you for my own”. This lyric is expressing Mariah's wanting. She really wants "you"/herself. I think it's safe to say that we've all felt the feeling of wanting something badly. She's hoping and has a strong desire for just this one gift which is the only thing she is wanting.

Lyric example #2: “all the lights are shining so brightly everywhere”. This lyric is trying to portray a happy and joyful vision and feeling to the listener. We often attribute bright lights with happy and joyous times. She may be using lyrics like this to cover up the somewhat sad meaning behind the song.

Lyric example #3: “the sound of children's laughter fills the air” This lyric also ties into that of the second example of attempting to give a happy and joyous feeling. The sound of children's laughter is one of great joy to others and nobody can prevent a smile from engulfing their face. She may be trying to flash back to her childhood when things were simpler and happier. She's keeping hold of these memories as a way to keep going instead of giving up.

Mariah Carey, acting as the speaker of the song, attempts to tell herself that all she need is herself for Christmas but also for her to be happy. Carey uses ethos and pathos appeals in both the lyrics and the videos. In analyzing both the lyrics and video, I have determined that both are effective, though, she has better success with the lyrics than she does in the video.
