He receives support from Stalin and Mao Zedong.

UN creates Resolution 83 that provides military assistance to South Korea. This is significant because it started the surrogate war on the US side.

Control over Seoul changes around 4 times over the course of the war. This is significant because Seoul was a big city and was very pivotal to the outcome of the war.

In 1953, Kim Il-Sung pronounces a ceasefire. Demilitarized zones are created. The South Korean President accepts, but never signed the document. This is significant because it means the war never came to an official end.

There was no true winner since it ended with an armistice. North Korea’s intention was to turn South Korea communist, so you could say South Korea won since they avoided this outcome. One major effect would be that South Korea avoided communism which would have affected the history of Korea. Another major effect would be an even greater red scare among other countries. Leaders would see that North Korea was successful if they won, and try to wage their own war.

Extends- In a paragraph, explain in detail how this surrogate/proxy war is a part of the larger Cold War and connects to the present day

The basis of the Cold War was Communist vs. Capitalist. The reason North Korea wanted to have a civil war against South Korea was to convert them to communism. This war affected both the Soviets and the US, and they were the two nations facing off in the Cold War. They each fought a surrogate war against each other during the Korean Civil War. They were each trying to protect their political beliefs, the same way they did during the rest of the Cold War. This connects to the present day because countries still protect their allies the way they did back then. Now, there is a war in Ukraine and many countries have come to support their back against Russia.

"Korean War Timeline". Encyclopedia Britannica, 2022, https://www.britannica.com/list/korean-war-timeline.
