Do you desire to be part of the group or do you desire to stand out and define your own persona? Collectivism culture takes pride in being part of an organized system and fear being labeled as the black sheep of the crowd, on the other hand, the individualism culture relish being unique and outstanding, while they feel captive if they have to follow the same protocol as everyone else.

When we are talking about time we can divide countries into two categories, monochronic and polychronic. Monochronic refers to valuing time and procedures, someone in this category will be punctual and conclude a task before passing to do something else, while polychronic can be chaotic with time, multitask, and won't prioritize schedule over relationships.

As you grow up, you are taught to act in a certain way to fit in, but what you suddenly have to go to a foreign county? Do you think you would manage to fit in there? What misunderstandings could occur because of miscommunication?

Culture changes as you travel, you don't even have to go to another country to notice differences, and when you interact with another culture you notice different reactions, mannerisms, and gestures, sometimes you can think that it is funny, weird, or even rude when all the people around you see it as normal and acceptable. Culture can act as a barrier is we are not aware and open-minded of the differences, there are hundreds of cultures around the world, if you don't learn to accept this it can lead you to several misunderstandings rather than enjoy something new.

It is a beautiful day and you decide to go outside, you are looking around, how are the people around you acting? Are people shouting and making wild gestures, living the moment? Or are they more resaved and collected of how they feel, waiting until they get home to show how they truly feel?

One of the many aspects influenced by culture is emotional expressivity, the tolerance each place has can vary from high to low or any point in the middle. This can create misunderstandings between cultures, passion can be confused as wildness or rudeness, and reservation can be confused as dullness or pride, when is nothing of the sort, just a difference in paradigms.

In what part of the spectrum do you consider yourself in? How can you be more understanding of those who find themselves in another part?

There can be a lot of misunderstandings because of what is considered good manners in our culture. For example, how do you greet people? Do you wave and give a polite smile from a distance, give a firm handshake, or give a big hug? How would you feel if you are greeted in another way different from what you are used to?

Some gestures or habits you perceive as universal can have a totally different meaning in other cultures, something helpful is to pay close attention to what others are doing and follow their example.
