Who was Santa Cecilia?

Virgin, saint and Roman martyr, patron saint of musicians. It is believed that she was born in Rome, into an illustrious family, and that she was married against her will to a young pagan named Valerius.

Cecilia managed to get her husband to respect her virginity and convert to Christianity. Valerio was baptized by Pope Urban, and, together with his brother Tiburcio, also converted, he buried the martyrs of the persecution of Turco Almaquio. Reported for this practice, both brothers were beheaded.

Cecilia was also denounced and sentenced to be thrown into the fire of the baths of her own house, but she escaped unharmed. Turco Almaquio then ordered her to be beheaded; Cecilia, wounded three times with the axe, expired after three days of agony. Pope Urban, helped by his deacons, buried the martyr and consecrated her house as a basilica.

Pope Gregory XIII named her patron saint of musicians because she had shown an irresistible attraction to the melodious chords of the instruments. His sensitive and passionate spirit for this art thus became his name a symbol of music.
