Explanation

Symbolism: the woman is used to represent the Europeans and the torch is used to represent their values and their beliefs. They try to civilize the natives with their values and beliefs, giving them the sense of hope (light) that they will help them but their greed of the power that is given to them reveals Conrad's criticism towards imperialism. The fact that the woman is blindfolded is because the Europeans are blind to the damage that they have done to the natives. The background was black because it showed evil effects Europeans had on these natives but since they were blindfolded, they were blind to their actions. The fact that the torchlight was burning her face, foreshadows how the Europeans are leading themselves to their own destruction. Conrad explains how imperialism led to overwhelming power that only motivated Kurtz to act on greed and manipulation, and not just only Kurtz but the Europeans as well.
