As counselors we must be equipped to handle many different kinds of situations that our students may face. Some of these situations faced can include emotional situations, educational and even sometimes situations having to do with drugs and abuse. As school counselors, our job is to protect and guide our students in order to ensure that they are successful.

An emerging area in school counseling related to working with suicidal students is bullying. Recently, bullying has been a leading cause of suicide in schools. Educators should watch to see if bullying is happening in their classrooms and should also be trained to prevent it. School counselors should spread bullying awareness in school as much as possible. Also, school counselors also play a role in counseling students who may be experiencing bullying.

The American School Counselor Association has a resource regarding Suicide Prevention that shares awareness on how to prevent suicide. The resource discusses the Model District Policy that provides resources on how to prevent suicide on school campuses.
