This article explains the differences of college experiences between those with parents who have graduated college and those who are first generation college students. The author is focused on determining the effects a parent's education level has on the success of their college student, especially during the first year. As it is very common for students to drop out of college before beginning their second year, Nichols found that second generation college students are more likely to make it farther than first generation college students, which later has an effect on graduation rates. 

Ashley Brooks’ in her article, ‘Experts Discuss the Importance of Positive Parental Involvement in Education’ intended audience are parents, the purpose of this source is to raise awareness on parental support in education. “The National PTA also shares that “family involvement improves student success, regardless of race/ethnicity, class or parents’ level of education.”1”

Children should have a parent or guardian to be there and support them through their schooling and education journey. The author does not have any biases, she is very supportive when bringing to mind the different ways to get involved. My thesis is; Children need a guardian in their lives to be able to support their educational progress. Some parents or guardians are not in their child’s lives and don’t give them the support they need to complete their education. However, when the support is given the child feels the need to continue and be successful. My sources in this research project provide different angles and perspectives. So, by having this one as the base and going from it. It gives my other sources support and something to go off of.

In a dream called home we follow Reyna Grande through an eminence amount of personal growth. She is an immigrant and has lived in poverty her entire life, although since moving to America her father has stressed the importance of a good education saying that here in the U.S. an education is the key to a better life. All on her own Reyna overcomes every obstacle thrown her way and does what many before her could not, she began to break the “poverty cycle” by staying true to her word and completing college all on her own. Through all the heartache and troubles Reyna tried to care for her sister, improve her education, and maintain a job to pay for a room to stay in. Now she is an accomplished writer and can look back and say, “It was all worth it.”

In “How Does Education Affect Poverty? It Can Help End It.” by Olivia Giovetti the author does an amazing job stressing the importance of a good education for our youth to save us from future poverty saying, “Education is often referred to as the great equalizer: It can open the door to jobs, resources, and skills that help a person not only survive, but thrive. This is why access to quality education is a globally-recognized solution to poverty. Education helps to remedy many of the other issues that can keep people, families, and even whole communities vulnerable to the cycle of poverty.” (1) In the article Giovetti calls a ,“Good quality education” the “Equalizer” or the “Leveler” for breaking the cycle of poverty (1). She says that if we devote our time and effort to bettering the education system we can break the cycles of poverty ensuring that our future generations have the best shot at economic freedom. It's not only about making one change, it's about making a change that will also stay with generations to come.

In this article Wolf talks about the importance of using education to break the “poverty cycle” by not just giving children an education but by taking a more “holistic approach.” Meaning schools shouldn’t just teach students to pass for test scores. They should take the time to really help make a change in the student, to show them that there is another way. This is exactly what happened with Reyna and her writing teacher, she believed in her, she showed her that her way wasn’t wrong, just that not everyone will understand her the way she would like. This is the approach I try to take with my own students. I fully agree with Wolf and believe that more people should take the time to really connect with and help their students. 

This article takes a dive into causes and correlation between education and third world poverty. As well as examining literature associated with attributions of poverty and how it’s associated with donation patterns. This article examines an immense amount of literature associated with abject poverty in the U.S. and how it can be affected by education. As well as examining a mass amount of statistics on the same topic. This article will offer me an incredible amount of information that will help me write my paper.

This article takes a look at the effect poverty has on the average student in the classroom. Kids come to school hungry, hurt, and hopeless, this article takes a look at the learning that is affected as a result. This article will benefit me greatly. This looks at a side of the issue in which the student is evaluated, not the system as a whole.

In this article Cookson dives into children and families living in extreme poverty, Meaning no housing or unreliable housing, Food shortages, and families recovering from hardships. He refers to children living in poverty as “invisible” but not in the way you may think, he says, “For those of us who believe in educational equity, making the invisible visible is the first step in overcoming deep disadvantage.” He's referring to how harsh some of these families' living conditions are, not everyone realizes what some of these students are going through. It's not always something like abuse or neglect, sometimes it's situations that seemingly can’t be helped or need time to repair. This is extremely important to my paper, not everyone understands how much an unstable home can shake someone's world especially for a child who has no control over their situation, that is why I chose this article to hopefully help make the invisible visible.

Child abuse can be a triggering word, but a lot of people do not register that there is more to unpack within it other than just physical atrocities like beatings, being tied up for an amount of time, torture etc. There is also emotional and vocal abuse. They use their words to make you submit to them, to make you feel small and weak so you can never put yourself out there and grow to become better than them. It is a hostile environment without the need for physical violence. All these things will make an impression on a child's mind and body. Their trauma and ghosts of the past follow them well into adulthood and even some into the afterlife. This trauma allows the children to develop anxiety, zero self-worth, a tendency to isolate oneself and often detachments from normal behavior and emotions.

Abuse has long-lasting, triggering effects on a person. Most people will deal with the stress of it negatively either by ignoring it or indulging it. People that ignore their trauma tend to be haunted by it. It's around them in everything they do, and it just does not seem to go away. This causes a hold on their personal and emotional growth. They become aggressive with others or tend to be emotionally unavailable with some unusual behaviors thrown in. There are also the people that indulge in the trauma. They tend to lean towards drugs, alcohol anything to take away the reminder. It hinders their ability to work. Work as a functioning person in society is either hard or nonexistent. Because of this depression and other mental disorders tend to develop and overtake them like a virus. Within all these people, there are also those who know there is something they need help with and go to their doctors, therapists, psychologists etc. For help. They work on themselves to be able to push the past through all the trauma and become a functioning person. Although even though they have better themselves mentally and physically, they will still have the lingering effects of their trauma. This goes to show just how awful the people in their life were and how badly they traumatized a young person to the point they are suffering as adults.
