I have used choice boards both to deliver a variety of modes of instruction and as an end of unit project. Students choose from a "menu" and are required to choose enough to add up to a "Total Possible".

When using choice boards for projects I incorporate rigor by giving students a "Total Possible Points" requirement. Then different levels of complexity projects/tasks have different point values. Students end up being required to pick from different complexity levels in order to meet the enough "points possible" requirement.

Less academically confident students usually start with the "easy" parts of the project and are then compelled to use higher levels of proficiency/complexity in order to meet the requirement. They often choose various projects which gives me a variety of evidence to assess from. More proficient students typically choose less projects which require multiple levels of performance complexity and insight on part of the student.

One, they are able to have more ways to choose and show that they mastered the level. If more "practice" is needed then they can attempt again in the same concept with another choice. Two, they are more willing to engage and complete if it is something they chose to do.

Students have the option to read and analyze whichever books they want as long as it falls under a specific category. For example, one of the categories is short-story collection. Students may read ANY book that is considered a short-story collection. This is providing choice in WHAT they are learning. Currently working up to HOW they demonstrate their analyses.
