Online mentoring is very useful, but in my opinion it should not be the only way. The ideal would be a blended path (on line and in site) in order to combine the aspects of the human relationship experienced in person with those of the utility offered by new technologies. This is also functional in cases, not too rare, of colleagues reluctant to use only online paths. In fact, the ability to access the internet and follow the webinars, chat or forums from a great opportunity could be turned into too liquid and unmanageable occasions, except with physical and tangible guidance such as the tutor's presence ensure.

I have no experience of online mentoring but I think that it can be used as a form of support for the mentee, it is time flexible and it can be useful both for mentee and mentor. The only drawback is the lack of human contact so I think that at a certain stage it is useful to plan some meetings, a weekly meeting at least to revise achieved goals and progresses.

I think that online mentoring offers interesting opportunities for developing knowledge, teaching skills and educational skills. In particular, online mentoring allows you to compare with other teachers about the teaching techniques you want to implement and the educational goals you want to reach students. I think online mentoring may be satisfying for both the mentor and the mentee. Technology can add flexibility and structure in a mentoring programme. As with face to face programmes, an element of structure is an important part of the success. As often said before, I have had no mentoring practice yet, neither as a mentee nor as a mentor. But I think I would find good use in my future practice for online mentoring as it allows for time flexibility and can make connection and discussion easier, more personal and as often as needed. Nevertheless it shouldn’t fully substitute personal contact and is better to be used when the relationship of mentor-mentee has been established, trust built, and the procedure of mentoring agreed. And, most important, regardless of the tool used, the stages and ways of collaborating should remain the same, focused on personal questions and issues of the mentee

Online mentoring could be quite useful if the mentor and the mentee don't work in the same school. But e have to keep in mind that students might feel stressed by the recording and the results of the activity to be false. As long as the teacher and the students can relax in front of the camera, the method is quite good.

As often said before this is my first online course and i havent had mentoring practice yet neither as a mentee nor as a mentor. So, in traditional mentoring relationships the mentor and mentee usually interact on a face to face basis. However, modern ways of communicating via the Web, email and other new technologies today, make online mentoring more feasible and more common. That being said, in my opinion there are always pros and cons to virtual mentoring.
PROPS:
1)it has the ability to provide mentoring access to anyone,anytime, to people working in remote location who would not otherwise have access to a mentor.
2)access to a larger pool of potential mentor and me tees to match together.
3)it is facilitated with the ease of a non restrictive meeting.
4)communication by email also allows both mentor and mentee to frame and consider answers to questions rather than have to provide solutions in real time.
5)cost effective
CONS
1)absence of body language,facial expressions and gestures/impersonal 2)difficult to build rapport using telephone,email,skype or text 3)technology problems4)lack of interest between mentor and mentee without being face to face5)time zones are a possible challenge. For example one mentor could be based as far as China while the mentee is in U.S.A, causing their meeting to be precarious at best.

I believe that technology can bring people closer to each other, and that this is what happens, for example with social networks, or even with the old e-mail. Tools like Skype or Connect allow today something that not many decades ago belonged to the realm of science fiction. Mentoring can greatly benefit from the use of these tools. Nothing will replace a warm personal encounter, but videoconferencing breaks down the distance barrier and may allow it to be taken as useful time, time that would be spent traveling.

Through the ewtinning platform I am used to online mentoring both as a mentor and as a mentee.

I often follow online Learning Events or Webinars on different topics that have helped my professional growth a lot. But I myself created a group where we have online events,where we meet with teachers of different school levels to discuss, share and reflect. It is not properly a mentoring practice, but I think that the advantages outnumber the drawbacks.Informal online conversations might be much more inspiring and stimulating than a face to face meeting and sometimes you feel like you were really sitting in the same room in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

As an etwinner, often paricipate in online Learning Events, webinars or Live events both as a mentor and a mentee. As an etwinner I have often been monitored , (for example during the online course to become European Ambassador ) and I have often used online mentoring during the webinars I usually organize for the net of schools I work with. If the online mentoring is often considered impersonal as it limits the ability to pick up on visual or social clues, making immediate feedback difficult, it is is less time-consuming and impersonality can be avoided thanks to the use of the chats, forums, or ICT tools for immediate response. In my experience as an eTwinning Ambassador , teachers often prefer online mentoring because they are more comfortable at home as in an informal environment

I think online mentoring could be useful especially if there will be a database with all the mentors across Europe. If a mentor is working or traveling across the Europe, he/she could be hired to do a mentoring job for a school in Europe. Also, if the mentor and the mentee decide together there is no need for them to work face to face on mentoring, they can collaborate online. I think that depends on every specific case. Sometimes, I mentor some of my colleagues online, but I know them very well and I can tell when the mentoring can be done online. So, I think that at least one or two sessions of mentoring should be face to face, in order to establish a real relationship with the mentee and to make a plan regarding the mentoring together with the mentee. Otherwise, I think that the mentor could miss some important aspects for the mentoring, including the human aspects. I believe that face to face communication is the real one and only after a face to face communication we can efficiently communicate online.

And then lessons are more interesting ... there could be animations, videos. Mentoring online can be useful and an economist form to practice it. We may be at long distance but we can talk and give our opinions and share ideas or documents and see each other by a virtual image and this procedure isn´t expensive. Even there are other advantages, like the time we choose to make mentoring. We have all day to practice, There´s no physical contact, or real image, but sharing things with people with other culture, who work in different Ministries of Education may be very gratifying and enriching for our learning. In Portugal mentoring isn´t usually. Mentoring online does´n t exist. I think we may develop this technique sharing this idea, but we must learn more about the «Know How» and we should perceive what downsides are coming with it.

My experience of online mentoring is related above all with eTwinning. Last year we (3 eTw ambassadors and I) run an online Learning Event for Italian teachers called "eTW and PNSD". It was a sort of online mentoring for less experienced teachers about important topics (digital implementations in schools, training for other teachers, etc.).
However, what I like the most is a mix of online and face to face mentoring. In these last two years we (a Spanish eTw ambassador and I) have been running an eTw project called "Let's eTw ER&MVO" where we mentor a group of Catalan and Italian teachers. We have had some online sessions (webinars and other collaborative activities in the Twinspace) and some face to face meetings to sum up, clarify, plan further steps, etc.).
In case of online mentoring, anyway, I think that it is crucial not to do it alone: if you do it together with other mentors you will certainly succeed!

I must admit that I have not yet used the online medium as a tool for mentoring but I can see many advantages to it. Firstly any spacial barrier could be easily overcome and you could mentor teachers from the other side of the globe. Secondly it would be a great timesaver and you and your mentee can easily have acces to information . One of the disadvantages of online mentoring (and I mean exclusive online mentoring) is that the connection between the mentor and mentee is much shalower and it is harder for one to open up to the other than in a face to face kind of interaction.

As stated in the videos, online mentoring is cost-effective, and also time and space effective. It could work well, I think, in less accessible areas, such as rural ones, where with the use of a phone or tablet, the mentee can record his/her lessons and then come in touch with his/her mentor in order to discuss them. It is true that some authenticity might be lost but if both mentor and mentee have this in mind and focus on certain specific areas, this could work really well. Another opportunity that online mentoring brings is sharing ideas across borders.

I have no experience as a mentor neither face to face or online. I took part in some online events when I was a presenter but just to show some good practices. I hae been an online mentee many times because I like learning from other people's experience. On the whole I think online metoring may be very convenient for both the mentor and the mentee because you can meet at unusual times, you are more relaxed because you are at home ecc. ; the drawbacks may be bad internet connections, problems with the audio or other technical problems.

I agree that the result of online mentoring is the same like face to face. I like to prepare may self to be a good online mentor using video mentoring and the tools for online collaborate with my mentee.

I dont have experience and was unaware of online mentoring, but meets the trends of the use of digital tools.
It seems to me that can generate discussions very interesting, on several subjects, taking analyzed situations in the video of a particular class. These discussions will address issues such as the behavior of the class, approaches of certain subjects, other strategies beyond what was the view, questions asked, or as should be done… you can play a fundamental role as an element fostering reflection and discussion, enriching a lot throughout the work.

First of all I would like to point out that I find online mentoring a fundamental part of mentoring, which, in a world that is increasingly moving to more sophisticated forms of video communication, needs to be always updated and engaging.
The only experience I have is not strictly related to mentoring new teachers, but concerns an online master degree(it lasted 2 years and a half) at Politecnico di Milano. That was the greatest experience I have ever had both for my tutor teacher (a sort of mentor) and for the collegues from all over Italy that I met online. We spent hours studying together, confronting, helping eachother, planning, creating collaborative projects, sharing both personal and professional problems and finding a solution together. Still grateful to my mentor and to my collegues. All this thanks to technology, to online conferences, to Google sharing facilities, to Skype etc...
So...What's more?
Online mentoring works definitely.

In Italy online mentoring is used for the training of new teachers, through a national platform, so the mentoring relationship at school level is expected to be different, in site. I have no experience in mentoring on line but I have followed many webinars that have helped me a lot. It is not the same but the aspect of coaching is something they have in common.
On line mentoring has the disavantage of the distance but, at the same time, the advantage of having a mentor who is always available.
The challenge for the mentor is to be able to create a nice athmosphere and use tools able to make "feel "the presence despite the distance ( live events, hangouts, skype sessions, weekly meetings).

We can use Skype, Facetime, video-conferencing and some other apps. Online training can be very convenient especially for thise who do not have time or money to attend face-to-face course; in a mentor-mentee situation, online mentoring can be useful when the mentor's and mentee's timetables prevent them from meeting less often than they'd like to or when the mentee works at more than one school or in any other situation where meeting face-to-face cannot happen on a regular basis. I've tried online mentoring during eTwinning courses. I must say it can work, particularly as you have a way to answer questions and show examples of what you are doing and comment on them. Like any other think we adapt nowadays to online, mentoring online can find its purpose and utility. I experienced Mentorin Online when I attended a SEN teaching specialisation course at the Venice University 10 years ago. As I live very far from Venice, as most of the students of that course coming from all over Italy, my Mentor gave me the feedback on few works and on the thesis via Skype and it was really useful for both . I think online mentoring could be useful. Online meetings could be set up at fixed times (once a week for example) to establish goals, discuss achieved progress or focus on flaws noticed during a lesson. I experienced online mentoring during a course by Università Ca’ Foscari in Venice and it worked.

The pros of online mentoring may be:

· Knowledge exchange from both parties

· Mentoring is facilitated with the ease of a non-restrictive meeting - This allows a less restrictive schedule for both parties

· Larger pool of potential mentor and mentees to match together.

· Good exposure for the mentee

The cons of online mentoring may be:

· Challenges in communication- Face-to-face communications offers more than virtual communication such as body language, and gestures.

· Lack of interest between the mentor and the mentee- (again without being face to face you can't tell the level of engagement your mentor or mentee feels in the relationship)

· Technology problems.

I’ve already gained some experience when it comes to mentoring online. Since my mentees always send me their lesson plans beforehand I use various functions of my word processor (e.g. commenting) to make additions, offer feedback and comment on it in general. I like the opportunity of looking at the plans since it helps me prevent some of the structural problems when it comes lesson-planning. Furthermore, I can get a basic idea with regard to the time management. Nonetheless, I think personal contact of greater importance as written feedback can be misunderstood as you cannot convey emotions, feelings and your tone of voice.

I have no experience in video mentoring and I'm agree with Olivia because I think is very important to work 'side by side'. In one of the first lessons of this course I agreed when Rachel said 'first of all: share a cup of tee with your mentee' but maybe is not possible trought the videos! Although my of online mentoring experience is very limited, I think we should go for it. In my area, for example, there are many more mentees than mentors. Online mentoring can adjust demand of mentors to the number of student teachers who require mentorship. Of course, the real classroom feeling is lost, but maybe is compensated by flexibility of timing and convenience for both mentors and mentees.

I think online mentoring offers great new opportunities. I have no experience in online mentoring but watching Rachel's and Maria Jesus's outlines I understood that online mentoring provides both opportunities and drawbacks. Online mentoring is cost effective,allows for time flexibility and mentors and mentee are available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. It's main drawback is that the human touch is lost, so the mentors have to find out how to compensate for that potential lack and I think that is a challenge. It is harder to gain a sense of authenticity online but not impossible to create an environment and an atmosphere where the conversation is what matters as opposed to any formality. So, I think the challenges should encourage any mentor to use online mentoring in his/her activity. I'll certainly will if I'll have the opportunity.

As eTwinning ambassador in my country I had some opportunities to mentor new eTwinners online and face to face : What I find most useful is the good mix of both experiences .I think online mentoring can give us both as mentor and mentees as well many opportunities. For example if we create online activities the mentee could do them at his /her own pace. At he same time it could be easier to follow the mentee even if he/she lives in an other country.
