"Once night came, we kids all lay in our rope-and-cardboard beds, reading by flashlight or a candle we'd set on our wooden boxes" (Walls 168). When they would read, it allowed  them to become closer together as a family, and make them not think of any struggles they had. I believe reading helped them keep their minds off of the struggles they faced. "Honey life in new York may not be as easy as you think its going to be." "I can handle it" (Walls 240) Jeanette is doing something she has ever done before, and moving independently to start a future. All though she cant wait to move, its going to be different not moving with her parents, and may be hard. I believe at first her moving was hard, and trying to settle in had to get use to. Leaving them with Erma. "I know what i saw, shes a pervert" (Walls 147) Rex acts strange to what Erma did to Brian, almost as if he was abused by Erma as well. I believe that Rex did not react to Brian getting abused because he faced it when he was a child. "Don't pretend you don't know, That just means your one of them" (Walls 275) While Rex and Rosemary always talk up their parenting skills, Maureen showed they obviously did not raise her right. "I knew dad would of hated that, spending his final moments in a hospital hooked up to machines" (Walls 280) Jeannette always had a close relationship with her father, even tho he would frustrate her at times, it took a lot for her to except hes dead.
