You've always been the uplifting mentor and professor we had in law school who constantly reminds and urges to keep going. A teacher points his students to the right direction. He encourages them when they falter, and he disciplines them when they need be. He is stern and caring at the same time. It is a difficult task to be a teacher, to be like a parent to so many.

That is why I have always admired those who teach.

You have helped me form a greater appreciation for our Country and for the Fundamental Law that makes it what it is today.

And you have taught me that in law school, failure is not something to be afraid of, for it is not the end, merely an obstacle one must overcome.

This has been one of my father’s favorite lines. This has also been one of the greatest lessons in life that I learned from him.

Entering law school is never easy. One has to possess the inexorable grit to overcome the daily struggles. In the same manner, despite the efforts to maintain that level of grit, we are also confronted with the limits of our capacity. However, each time that occurs, we are more than blessed to have you by our side.

You have been one of the constant pillars in my law school journey, allowing me to see what a passionate and empathetic lawyer can achieve. Little did I know that I’d be taken under your wing, a professor like you who is fatherly—looking out for us every step of the way, and rooting for each of his students to win. All my life I have been haunted by warnings of terrorizing law professors—I dreaded it. Although admittedly you did terrorize us (or me) for a time with your chilling recitations, but it was all in good intentions so as to instill within us the concept of earning the privilege to protect the rights of others. Each time I find myself wanting to give up, your tender advice echoes at the back of my head: At times you feel beat down, always remember why you started. I will.

I sometimes find myself wanting to teach the law, too, because you’ve set a standard I only wish, for now, that I could reach. Your constant reassurance, encouragement, and wisdom pushes me to strive harder and smarter. The future is a blur, and I know not everything that lies ahead, but I believe it is bright and just. As you have envisioned for us, your future pañeros and pañeras, so we shall strive for it to be.

Even before, when I was an undegrad in AdDU, I always look up you as our University Registrar. It is an honor to be a student of an esteemed educator in AdDU. You were the very first professor we met in our journey in Law School. My desire to study law was initially sparked by your enthusiasm and commitment. I used to be afraid in your classes. One of my first heartbreaks in law school came when I first had your recitation. It hurt when I failed your first exam; I was disoriented and unsure of my direction. It was a tornado of feelings. I've been doubting my efforts and worth a lot.

When we had our first meeting, I asked for some advice and you said it very simply...
"Never give up." Three simple words. But it is what I hold on to through rough times.

I never had a father figure that offered me guidance when I was growing up until I met you. And through the course of our communication, I felt it sincerely. It feels good to know how it feels to have a dad. I will always be grateful and blessed for all the things you taught me beyond the books.

Thank you for reminding us to eat our meals, to spend time with our loved ones, to pray, to be humble, to enjoy - to be human.

We may not remember all the cases you discussed or the provisions in toto. But if there's one thing you taught me (us) well, it is to be a human with virtue - to teach with a kind heart, to be relatable, to touch people's lives through simple acts of kindness and humility.

Thank you for instilling in me these good values that nowhere in the codals will I ever find.
