I believe that Sylvia Plath does not support the American Dream because in many of her works she speaks of hardships on the specific group of women in America. Now having hardships in her writing doesn’t mean she does not support it but, she does show in a lot of her work that regardless of what the people in her stories do they will not be as successful as men.

The Bell Jar shows and proves that Sylvia Plath does not support the idea of the American Dream. In her famed short story “The Bell Jar” she tells a story the eyes of Esther Greenwood. She is a hard working woman and has made a good living through tedious hours of non-stop grinding. Throughout the story the character battles herself, her emotional illnesses, and the society around her. This story supports the claim that Sylvia does not believe in the idea of the American Dream. She writes in her story about the fact even though this woman is very successful which is an ideal in the American Dream, it comes at great detriment to her health and her happiness. The character enjoys her wealth but, at some points even contemplates suicide. For this reason I do not think that Sylvia Plath supports the American Dream ideal.

Sylvia Plath Biography

In this biography of Sylvia Plath they talk about her short but star studded life in writing poems and novels. Throughout her life she invalidates the idea of the American Dream because of the patriachal society she lived in. In the biography they say how highly that Sylvia thought of her father when she was younger. He passed away when she was 8 years old. But when she looked back on her childhood as a grown woman she realized that her father was not a good person and tried to play the role of God in her life. This realization for her, allowed for her to form her view of the american condition at the time. And her end picture of the American Dream was that you had to be a man to see true success and happiness. I believe that Slyiva does not believe in the American Dream because of the experiences in her life. She led a very successful life in America but it did not mean happiness. She did not believe in the fact that happiness and success in America could be obtained by certain groups of people.

Lady Lazarus

In the poem, Lady Lazarus Sylvia speaks about how she wants to die because of the men in society. She dies multiple times but against her will comes back to life each time. Throughout the story, she shows that men take over her life and her happiness and she vows that when she rises back up and "eat men like air". In this source, I believe that she is saying that she doesn't believe in the American Dream because she keeps dying and killing herself because of the men in her society. She does want to come up again and beat the people that have oppressed her.
