This mask is meant to be used when mourning for the dead. The white represents the spirit world, the black represents the unity of the people in Africa mourning all at the loss of a loved one. The red represents the life and blood the person had but will now part with. The blue represents the innocence of the recently deceased person to convince the spirits that it was a good soul. The yellow represents the wealth that the person had and will have in the spirit world. And the green represents the earth that the persons body will be returning too.

_{Deep in the heart of Africa, within a tribe that held nature in the highest regard, a legendary tale of an encounter with a majestic cheetah was passed down through generations. This remarkable encounter inspired the tribe’s most skilled artisans to create a cheetah mask, meticulously crafted with intricate patterns and vibrant colors that mirrored the cheetah’s sleek coat. The mask became a cherished symbol within the tribe, embodying the spirit of the swift and graceful cheetah. It was believed that wearing the mask during sacred ceremonies would invoke the cheetah’s strength and agility, granting protection and guidance to those who wore it. As time passed, the cheetah mask became an integral part of the tribe’s culture, serving as a reminder of their deep connection to the natural world and the wisdom found within it.}

  Once a family of four was enjoying a normal day at home after catching a good meal with their members. They ate and that is when multiple weird events started happening. Their furniture started moving unexpectedly, and their pictures were being knocked over. They called a priest but that was the worst thing they could have done. They had angered a mob of evil demons who changed their written prophecy into saying their whole community will soon perish. They made a powerful, elegant, and united army to fight these demons and they held their ground. They waited and waited until they came to the realization that the demons were never coming. But just in case they ever come back they built ten special masks with the colors Black: Union of Africa, Green: Earth and Africa as the mother, Red: blood, and war, and Giraffe: elegance. Now one has been recovered from the ground and showcased at Palms Middle School!

My Africa-related mask represents Africa because of the color pattern that I used which is related to the African flag, the colors that I used are red, yellow, and green. The mask relates to me because my family is Garifuna. Garifuna is a culture in Belize that is mixed with people from Africa and Caribbean and a lot more. They use these types of masks for dancing and city gatherings. Gatherings where people play loud reggae music and party next to the nice islands with their beautiful masks. Africa spreads throughout lots of places and their culture will live on and be a part of everything because Africa has a lot to do with other cultures.

The mask that I created is something that I think could've been worn to a wedding or some sort of union. The flower would represent the blooming relationship and the spikes would symbolize the courage and strength needed to keep a healthy connection. The serious facial expression could signify that it was an important matter and the obstacles the union might face, but the leaves offer good health and happiness. The beads would be a symbol of prosperity and the geometric designs could be a sign of peace. Lastly, the plant sprouting from the top would represent how there was still room to grow and develop stronger bonds.

This mask is used for sacrifice. This is why there is a lot of red, which symbolizes sacrifice. There are also bone beads which may symbolize death. People wear it to honor the one sacrificed and hope they are at peace after they die. This is why there is white, which symbolizes peace and purity. Lastly, black can symbolize mourning, which in this case is for the one being sacrificed.

This is a mask of a farmer used for celebrating a bountiful harvest. After many years of unsuccessful harvest seasons with crops failing to grow, the farmer finally has a harvest to remember! This mask is simple yet in touch with the nature around the farmer, showing his connection to the earth and the crops around him. I chose to use orange because it symbolizes autumn the harvest season, yellow to represent the wealth that is soon to be made with the selling of the crops, Green symbolizes fertile earth and nature, and white symbolizes the purity and bounty of the harvest.

This African mask was passed down from generation to generation by powerful kings in a powerful kingdom as a war mask. This mask was made when the maker of the mask befriended an elephant, and they eventually became lifelong friends. When the elephant died, the first owner of the mask made it in the elephant’s honor. The red represents death and war, the green represents royalty, yellow represents both wealth and friendship of the two. Even though the maker and the elephant are gone, their spirits live on through this mask, and the mask will give great strength to its wearer.

The Bwa masks were traditionally made to be used in funeral ceremonies and are intended to make natural spirits visible to the community that is there. This tall plank mask was created after the encounter of a mythological encounter in which a flying spirit appeared next to a human, offering its protection and service to the human. It was used to honor the spirit and ensure its continued beneficence. The colors on the Bwa masks each represent something in life. The red is for life and danger. The white is for death and illness. The black is for purity and knowledge.

     The person who performs with a mask, called a masker, will undergo a physical change. The costume worn with a mask is just as important as the mask itself. A masker dresses in private and covers every inch of their body to conceal their identity. Costumes can be quite complex, made with hoops, padding, poles, and layers of fabric and raffia. 

     The masked spirit appears to the community in a music and dance performance known as a masquerade. Sometimes the spirit’s movements are unpredictable. Although audience members know that a human being is behind the mask, they accept that the spirit of the mask is present. They may respond to the spirit with fear or joy, depending on the purpose of the spirit’s visit.

This is a representation of Sudika-mbambi. He was the son of the daughter of the Sun and Moon. This is why he is shown as an antelope because antelopes are spiritual creatures. When he was born he had to fight a monster with his twin brother because the monster destroyed his parent’s house. The red represents his grief and the black represents war. This is why they are taking over his innocence, represented by the color white.

My mask is supposed to represent peace for white portions, plus darkness and power for black portions. As these colors are both merged into the same mask, it represents that sometimes two of the opposing sides can come together and become stronger than ever before. Sometimes we need to set aside our differences and come into one. The other colors represent the joy that can come out of doing this, as you may see green, blue, red, yellow, and all sorts of colors.

My mask was used for festivals. Blue represents love and peace. Green stands for the growth of crops and vegetation, red represents bloodshed and yellow stands for beauty and money.

This mask was used by medieval West African tribes while hunting. It was almost completely made of items you could find in nature such as small branches, bright red leaves, and aloe plants. The natural appearance would lure animals towards the hunters, allowing them to catch animals much more easily.

This mask contains a human soul. The soul that is trapped in the mask contains a very familiar person in West African history. The famous Mansa Musa’s grandfather, Sundiata, is the poor soul who was trapped in the mask. In 1255, Sundiata encounters a wizard king named OugaTùgatùga. While the current ruler of Mali, Sundiata, and his soldiers were on an expedition to explore the jungles around their civilization. They were ambushed by the wizard king and his workers. The men of Mali managed to survive the attack without much injury. Sundiata asked the wizard king what his intentions for attacking him were. OugaTugatuga ignored him and persisted with his attack. The wizard king’s minions had magic and they defeated Sundiata’s men. After every soldier was defeated, Sundiata fell back and surrendered. He attempted to cry out something but wasn’t heard and ended up getting suck in the mask.

        This mask was used for storytelling. The white represents purity and peace. The red represents sacrifice. This mask was used for storytelling and sacrificial rituals. This mask was used for a scary story about death. They would take this mask out when blood was involved.
