The independent variables were:
- Position of (KI)
As seen in the data, the position of the (KI) moves closer to the Lead Nitrate as the distance between the two slats decrease 
- Time difference of putting two salts
- Mass of (KI)

The position of the salts allowed the scientists to manipulate where they are in order to form a precipitate, while changing the timing of when to put in each salt allows the scientist to manipulate when each salt will diffuse, while changing the mass of KI allows the scientist to further control when the salts diffuse.
