Masks are often used in plays to portray a specific expression or character. A deeper interpretation could also explore how actors and actresses are also effectively 'wearing' a mask while onstage, as they are another character while performing. Even as he dies, Arthur's last words are from King Lear: 'The wren goes to't', showing how he is struggling to stay in character and continue the 'facade' of wearing the mask.

It shows the transition from a traditional theatre into a new modern world which is mirrored through St. Jhon Mendel's use of Shakespeare plays in the book. Shakespeare's plays are constantly being re-created and performed and are constantly being changed and transitioned to appeal to a wider range of people.

It also reflects the fact that inside the theatre no one knows that the world outside is changing for the worse the Georgia flu. From the moment they leave the theatre, they will be exposed to the virus, thus changing their lives
