In 1971 his family moved to California. After studying physics at California State University at Fullerton, Cameron worked at a series of jobs, including machinist and truck driver, before a viewing of Star Wars inspired him to try his hand at moviemaking.
     He has two brothers,  John David Cameron and Mike Cameron. John is a well-known writer and mike is an aerospace engineer and a stunt performer.
    He has had five wives and is currently married to Suzy Amis.     Once he finished studying special effects he managed to get his first short film Xenogenisis funded by a consortium of dentists. This is how he learned how to write, produce, and direct a film in order to get it completed. According to Cameron, he got his big break while doing pick-up shots for Galaxy of Terror (1981) as second unit director. He was shooting scenes of a dismembered arm teeming with maggots (actually mealworms).
In September 2020, Cameron revealed that they were "100% complete" on Avatar 2 and around 95% finished on Avatar 3. As mentioned above, Cameron said in April 2022 that he is putting the "final touches" on the sequel, so everything seems on track for the December release.
