Fostering a Secure and More Enjoyable Online Community with Netiquette and Netizenship

In today's digital age, the internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. It's where we connect with friends, share our thoughts and experiences, and access a wealth of information. However, this digital age comes with its own set of responsibilities and expectations. Two crucial concepts to grasp in the online world are netiquette and netizenship. In this blog post, we'll explore what these terms mean and how they apply to all internet users.

According to Raising Children Network (n.d.), Netizenship goes beyond just adhering to netiquette rules; it encompasses being an active and responsible member of the online community. It's about embracing your role as a digital citizen and contributing positively to the virtual world. Here's how you can practice netizenship:

Critical Thinking: <del>Verify information before sharing it online. False or misleading information can perpetuate quickly, so be a responsible sharer and consumer of content.</del>

Online Civility: <del>Be respectful and empathetic in your online interactions. Remember that there are real people behind the screens, and your words can have a profound impact on them.</del>

Cybersecurity Awareness: <del>Protect your digital identity and personal information. Use strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and be cautious about sharing sensitive data.</del>

Understanding Netiquette

According to Bow Valley College (2023), netiquette is a portmanteau of "internet" and "etiquette," which refers to the rules and conventions governing proper behavior and communication on the internet. Just as we have societal norms and etiquette in the physical world, netiquette guides our online interactions. It serves as a digital code of conduct to ensure respectful and harmonious online engagement.

Why Netiquette Matters for Netizens?

Netiquette matters for netizens because it promotes respectful interactions, builds trust, nurtures meaningful relationships, reduces conflicts, and upholds a positive digital reputation in the online world. Practicing netiquette is essential for fostering a healthy and harmonious digital community.
</sup>

Reporting and Responding to Online Misconduct

Unfortunately, not everyone adheres to netiquette, and you may encounter online misconduct or cyberbullying. It's crucial to know how to respond appropriately:

Report Abuse: <del>Most online platforms have reporting mechanisms for abusive behavior. Use them to notify platform administrators of any misconduct.</del>

Stay Calm: <del>If faced with negative comments or harassment, it's best to remain calm and avoid engaging in arguments. Block or mute the individual if necessary.</del>

Seek Support: <del>Talk to a trusted friend or family member about the situation if you're feeling overwhelmed. They can offer emotional support and guidance.</del>

In conclusion, netiquette is the foundation of responsible online citizenship. By following these guidelines, netizens can excel both professionally and personally, while internet friends can build lasting, positive relationships. Remember that the internet is a vast and diverse space, and being a responsible netizen contributes to making it a safer and more pleasant place for all. So, let's navigate the digital world with grace and respect, and set an example of good netiquette for others to follow.

Citations:

Bow Valley College.
The Opportunities, Threats, and Challenges of Media, Information, and Technology Literacy

In this day and age, media, Information, and technology literacy are deeply implanted within our lives. Understanding media and its function in our society is based on media and information literacy and it also teaches some of the essential skills required for critical thinking, analysis, self-expression, and creativity, all of which are needed for citizens in a democratic society according to Digital Citizenship Education (n.d). These literacies offer opportunities, but they also bring serious threats and challenges. In this blog, we’ll explore how these affect us.

Media, Information, and Technology literacy gives us a lot of opportunities. We can use the internet to find the information we need. We find internet practical for it helps us learn new things and it keeps us updated. As a student, we can gather information online with ease. In terms of social, it allows us to communicate and connect with other people.

We can be productive and creative with the help of media, information and technology literacy, but it also be most likely to become the main reason as to why people are prone to being deceived and relying on what's new. As technology develops, false information gets more and more common. It has become challenging to determine what content is based on fact, half-truths, or lies because there are so many information sources available online. When we use digital platforms for sharing ideas we think are genuine but aren't necessarily accurate, it can have a significant impact on how others perceive those ideas (Internet Matters, 2023).

Too much understanding in technology can result to crimes like cyberbullying, plagiarisms, identity theft, and more. It is essential to educate people about proper netiquette to ensure that these threats will be prevented from spreading out.

In conclusion, media, information, and technology literacy are essential skills for identifying opportunities, managing threats, and meeting challenges in the digital age. Individuals and society can interact in this complicated environment with confidence and resiliency with the support of education, regulation, and collective awareness.

Citations:
•	Digital Citizenship Education, (n.d), Media and Information Literacy. Some of which includes hearing something about a neighbor and telling the other neighbors without verifying the information or reposting a negative campaign advertisement about a political candidate without checking if it's true.

Jumping to conclusions can also lead to a spread of misinformation. For instance, reading only the headline for an article and forming an opinion without reading the rest of the article or hearing the first few minutes of a news story and repeating it to others are some examples.

Accidentally relying on bad sources may also lead to the same scenario. This is because an individual can disseminate misinformation by trusting the opinions of people who reflect your opinion rather than experts in the field or by reposting an article without noticing that the person who wrote it is biased.

Disinformation, on the other hand, is viewed as the incorrect information that you knew was not true. Gunner J. (2021)

Gunner J. (2021) provided three examples of spreading misinformation.

Starting untrue rumors and spreading them with malicious intentions are guilty of disseminating disinformation, especially if an individual knows that it is not true yet spreads it anyways. For instance, telling the teacher that you saw a classmate cheating because you want the highest grade in the class and making up something negative about other people because you hate them are examples of disinformation.

Leaving out details can also cause disinformation to take place. By withholding relevant details can result in a reader or listener to jump to conclusions, which is what the writer expects. For example, telling others about a news story but leaving out important details that might change their minds and making a restaurant sound bad by not including the positive elements of a night out and only complaining about what went wrong may lead to a spread of disinformation.

Using bad sources that they are certain is misleading can be another way to intentionally deceive people into disseminating incorrect information. A person may spread disinformation if they are acting like someone is more reliable than actual experts when you know they're not or if they are posting an image that is clearly manipulated but acting like it's not.

In conclusion, the information is the knowledge that is obtained from investigation, study, and research. There are two negative types of information. Misinformation, wherein people think the information they gathered is true, but it is not. And disinformation, wherein people know that the information they gathered is not true yet they say it anyways.

With that being taken into consideration, it is important to bare in mind the possible effects of certain informational sources since these can inform people about its overall content and how reliable it really is because the information one withholds may have effects on an individual's emotional state and personal information. LibGuides at Empire State University (2023).

Citations:

Gunner et al.
The Boon and Bane of the Information Age

In today's rapidly changing world, the internet stands as one of the most revolutionary inventions of the modern era. It has transformed the way we live, work, and connect with each other. However, like any powerful tool, the internet comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages, making it both a boon and a bane of the new information age.

The Boons:

Access to Information: The internet has democratized accessing information. Anyone with an internet connection can virtually learn about any topic, from academic researches to DIY tutorials.

Global Connectivity: The internet provided us with many different social platforms to connect with other people. It broke down social barriers, and helped with understanding different cultures. People can now interact, and communicate over long distances.

Economic Opportunities: The internet has created countless job opportunities in fields like digital marketing, e-commerce, and freelance work. It has also empowered entrepreneurs to start businesses with relatively low overhead costs.

Innovation: The rapid exchange of ideas online has fueled innovation in various sectors, from technology and healthcare to education and entertainment.

The Banes:

Information Overload: A crowded "information society" has recently seen a dramatic rise in the production of formal and informal information, with the amount of information created every two days equaling that produced from the dawn of civilization until the year 2003 (Seigler, 2003). As a result, the amount of information created is one of the numbers that is expanding most quickly on Earth, and information overload is recognized as having the potential to be a major problem for society. Feather (1998) proposed that information overload may have been defined as the point at which there is so much information that it cannot be used efficiently whereas Bawden, Holtham, and Courtney (1999) proposed that information overload happened when potentially helpful information received turned into a burden rather than a help.

Privacy Concerns: The internet raised privacy concerns due to personal data being collected, stored, and sometimes misused by large companies. Online privacy breaches have also become increasingly common.

Social Isolation: Even though the internet is capable of connecting people from all around the globe, it can still cause feelings of isolation. Spending an excessive amount of time online will lead to a reduced number of face-to-face interactions, which could also lead to mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

Cybersecurity Threats: The internet has plenty of websites that can expose people to cyber threats. These include viruses, malware, phishing, and data breaches. Individuals and organizations must invest in security measures to protect themselves from these attacks.

In conclusion, the current information age can offer many benefits in terms of accessing information, social interaction, economy, and innovation. However, it is also vulnerable to information overload, privacy breaches, isolation, and cyber threats. This is the reason as to why it is crucial for individuals, businesses, and governments to strike a balance between utilizing the internet's advantages, and minimizing its disadvantages in this digital age.

Citation:

Farzaneh et al.
AI Tools: A Help or a Hindrance?

This era has seen an increase in awareness of artificial intelligence, or AI. Due to the widespread use of technology, the majority of people in this generation are aware of this. With the technological advancement, AI Tools come into play. A software program called AI Tools is used to carry out specific tasks and address issues using artificial intelligence algorithms, according to the website Synthesia. This is used in many different fields, including healthcare, finance, marketing, and education.

Businesses have already started using AI tools because they can help make work simpler and more efficient, especially for students. Welding (2023) stated that 43% of college students have used AI tools. Contrarily, the majority of college students, with a percentage of 57%, stated that they do not intend to use AI because doing so constitutes cheating or plagiarism. In contrast, only 35% of businesses are using AI, while 42% are considering using it in the future (TechJury article). With these surveys, are AI Tools a help or hindrance?

Using AI tools helps us work more efficiently and ensure that no time is wasted—not just in school, but also at work. In particular, AI in business is a widely adopted technology, but most businesses use it to gain a competitive edge. According to an expert, using AI will help you advance and set your business apart from rivals. It supports businesses' efforts to increase output, automate processes, and analyze data. AI has grown to be a crucial tool for businesses. On the other hand, while most people concur that using AI tools has many advantages, some people are against using AI because they believe it will have negative effects, particularly in academia. Agostino (2023) warns that AI poses a threat to widening the educational divide. As reported by Lura Dumin, some students are more confident in an AI tool's output than in their own work. While some students enjoy using AI tools because they help them develop their perspectives on the value of education, others worry about how AI will affect their education or future careers since this undermines the purpose of education. They hold that human intelligence and creativity will not be replaced by AI.

To summarize, using AI tools can be both beneficial and detrimental. It has a positive effect if used correctly, but if it is handled incorrectly, we can assume that it will impede our development as students and as people.

Citations:

Ashley W. 2023. 30+ Artificial Intelligence Statistics and Facts for 2023.
Responsible Use of Social Media

Due to its advantages, social media is a beneficial tool that is still becoming more and more popular up until now. Some famous social media platforms that have been popular today are Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter.

We see people using their technologies everywhere we go. Smartphones are incredibly user-friendly, and kids may even search for content they wish to watch, play, or listen to! This indicates that while their parents aren't there, kids can easily access everything, including unpleasant things with just one click from their devices.

Through social media, we can access any information, be entertained, and communicate with other people. One of the benefits of social media is it helps us to express our feelings and opinions along with learning new things. Social media can also help in raising awareness about certain issues which can be disseminated with a wide range of people.

On the other hand, there are also disadvantages from social media when misused. Some of these are cyberbullying and fake news. Vicki Kirkman (2020), said that it is possible for the users to be exposed to violent content when there is no monitor from parents. Meanwhile, social media addiction is one of the most famous problems that a lot of people are facing.

The following tips are some advice that would help you in utilizing social media responsibly.

1.) Manage your time. Setting a time limit on how long you would use social media can help to reduce addiction and help you to focus on more important things. Some apps also have settings where you would get an alert when the time limit is reached. This way, you can control your screen time and this will help you to increase productivity and focus.

2.) Avoid fake news. When scrolling through social media, there is a lot of information that you would get but it is important to check if the information is credible and based on facts. Being mindful of what you see on the internet is crucial for you to not get swayed easily and one of the things that you can do to prevent it is to look for official news websites to know if the information is real.

3.) Think before you post. It is important to be conscious of what you are posting on social media since a lot of people can see it. Make sure that your post won’t negatively affect other people and ensure a positive digital reputation.

4.) Being Mindful. Whenever you scroll social media, you will encounter a lot of information that would affect your mental state. By being mindful, you can be conscious of your surroundings and how social media influences your emotions. You can have a clearer understanding of the things that are more significant when you keep your attention on the real world.

5.) Know your purpose. Sometimes, we forget to actually appreciate social media and realize the things that we can get from it thus, we must engage more on understanding the main purpose of social media and interact with others instead of merely scrolling through it.

With this being said, we can apply many ways for us to make use of social media more responsibly and take actions that would help us to be more cautious about using it. It is important to remember that social media can help us in many ways and allows us to share our ideas. But if we abuse and overuse it, it can cause us problems, which is why using social media responsibly can help us to avoid harm and less consequences, JagWire staff (2019).

Citations:

Vicki Kirman (2020).

In today's world, almost everyone is surrounded by media in their everyday lives. As you can see, it would be very difficult to imagine not having it because it provides us with everything that we need. But, I have a question. Is everyone aware of how it all began? If you still don't know let us now investigate how media was then and how it is now.

<var>Then: Social Media at Pre - 1900</var>

According to Samantha Lile, Around the time of 1900, social media was created in its conventional forms with the use of handwritten letters as a means of communication. As time passed, they started to learn about the "telegraph," which enables people to communicate with one another while being far apart. As time went on, they also learned about radio and telephone lines, which were more practical for people back then.

Simply said, media from that era wasn't all that high-tech. There aren't many ways to communicate with others. People frequently engage in activities like writing just to connect with others. Due to several developments, new forms of communication, such as the telephone and telegraph, have been invented.

<var>Now: Social Media in the 20th Century</var>

According again to Samantha Lile, Social Media began to quickly develop in the 20th Century. Computers and other technology, such as smartphones, laptops, iPads, and several more devices, have the benefit of being simpler to operate than those we previously had. A variety of social media platforms and networking websites were also established at the same time and have been in use ever since. Today, social media has a significant influence on practically every aspect of our lives. Almost a wide range of people are unable to function without social media since it is how they communicate and engage with other people. Social media keeps you informed about a variety of topics, including the news, your surroundings, trends, and even the individuals in your immediate vicinity.

Many things have become more practical as a result of the advancements made throughout the 20th century. It has also provided us with numerous opportunities, learnings, entertainments, and other benefits

In conclusion, there has been a big process and efforts for us to be able to experience the things that what we are currently having.

Citation:

L.
