Virtual reality was first introduced at the British Museum in 2015 to allow museum visitors to experience the Bronze Age for themselves. Virtual reality usually is an experience where you put on a headset that covers your field of vision and a pair of headphones. You are then immersed into a period of time, a place in the world and are able to experience something that you probably wouldn't be able to in the real world, which is why it's so special. This is an experience that can be both entertaining and educational. Now, we can see exhibitions like the traveling Ramses the Great exhibition at the deYoung museum, where visitors have the option to sit in an egg-like chair that moves with the visuals you're seeing through the headset. This technology is continuously improving.

Designed to match the fact that it’s a design museum, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum gives each visitor a smart-pen upon entry. This pen allows one to go deeper into the designs they have on display. They can learn more about the designers and their processes, as well as digitally save images and notes they find interesting. Since it is modeled as a pen, visitors can obviously have their hand in creating their own designs. This grants a new level to museum-goers as far as interactivity goes.

The Met museum was the first to integrate binaural technology into their audio tours. Binaural tech allows the listener to be in a three-dimensional audio situation, orienting the sounds heard in a way that would be heard in the real world. This was used by The Met during their Visitors in Versailles exhibition, providing an audio tour that is guided by characters who would have been in Versailles, providing sound effects that feel within your space. This technology allows visitors to have a more immersive experience.

Augmented reality combines the real world with computer-generated content. The most prominent example of AR being used in the context of museums was the development of the app, Civilisation AR. This was developed as a collaboration with the UK's historical artifacts museums. It allows the user to look at artifacts and learn about them on their personal devices, while the artifact seems to be in your real-life space, to scale. It's a new way to interact with objects, without going to a museum.

The immersive Van Gogh exhibition broke the ticket boxes and was a big hit. This was all done with projection mapping, the idea of images being projected on the walls of a space, creating a space where the viewer is within the images projected. Specifically in the Van Gogh exhibit, the images were animated so the paintings feel alive, and the imagery was accompanied by surrounding music and sounds.

New visitor tracking technology gives real-time data on visitor statuses coming in and out of galleries. This could be done by tracking wifi connections, online ticket sales, or like Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, through the installation of Xovis 3D sensors. They blend into the complex Gothic architecture and successfully tracks visitors within the galleries, sending real-time stats to museum staff, so they can adjust accordingly to incoming and departing people.

Virtual museums are well, half of the future. While I don’t think it will ever replace physically standing in front of a painting or sculpture, it will be big and this is just the beginning. Museum of Plastic 2121 is an online experience where the next 300 years of human history are laid out in front of you with digital art, regarding humanity’s overuse of plastic. Not only is it almost completely accessible, it showcases digital art in a new way.
