         <description><![CDATA[<div>There are multiple suspicions that the character accused of rape, Tom Robinson, was modeled after the falsely accused Walter Lett (1936) or Emmett Till (1955).<br><br>Walter Lett, a black man, was falsely accused of raping a white woman and was still given a prison sentence in 1936.<br><br>Emmett Till was murdered after allegedly flirting with a white woman in 1955.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1926:  Lee's father defended two black men accused of murder.  These men were sentenced and executed.  After this case, her father stopped taking on criminal cases.<br><br>March 1931:  Two white prostitutes accused nine black men of rape.  Eight of the nine received death sentences and they became known as the Scottsboro Boys.<br><br>1933:  Walter Lett was falsely accused of raping a white woman.  Many citizens of Monroeville, including Lee, petitioned the governor on his behalf.<br><br>1955:  Emmett Till's murder took place, jump starting the Civil Rights Revolution in the United States.</div>]]></description>
