Hi! My name is John and I am your instructor! I look forward to learning with you this spring. I did the GSE 5-year math ed program myself, graduating in 2008, so I am very familiar with what you are going through :) I taught HS math for 7 years, and became an Assistant Principal, then K-12 Director of Mathematics in the same district. Most recently, I finished my Ed.D. in Design of Learning Environments at the GSE in May 2018. All the while, I have been a PTL at Rutgers since my 5th year in the 5-year program. My primary research area of interest is flipped classroom, but I have been working with other faculty members on self-efficacy, active learning in Math 115 and Math 152 (everyones' favorite), and working with pre-service math teachers. My hobbies include biking, reading about math, and cruising around in my new Jeep.

Hello everyone. My name is Angelo Villanueva. I did my student teaching at Ridgefield Memorial High School this past semester. I taught two sections of algebra 1 and three sections of algebra 2. Both algebra 1 sections were in-class-support, meaning that I worked alongside a special education teacher. I learned so much from the in-class-support teachers with regards to presenting the material, arranging groups, and differentiating instruction for our students with special needs. Overall, I had a great student-teaching experience and I look forward to sharing some of it with you all this coming semester. When I am not teaching or learning math, however, I like watching/playing soccer with friends as well as playing all kinds of video games.

I absolutely loved everything about my placement. The students were awesome and very intelligent and they made my experience very memorable . However, unfortunately, my use of technology in the classroom was restrict by my cooperating teacher. Through this class, I was hoping to gain some insight on cool and innovative ways of using technology in the classroom. Some of my hobbies include, traveling, running, and playing board games.

My experience there was amazing and I learned so much! I am taking a maternity leave position at the other Parsippany High School, Parsippany High, next semester and am really looking forward to it. Through out my undergraduate degree I lived at Rutgers. I am from north Jersey so this will be my first semester with a commute. However I am looking forward to getting back to grad classes and finally completing our program!

Hey guys! My name is Julia Ferrante. I had quite the GSE student teaching experience! Something always happened with my placement every semester but it always worked out in the end! Ken and Lisa have gotten to know me quite well :) they are very helpful! I spend most of my time student teaching at Linwood Middle School in North Brunswick teaching 8th Grade - CP Algebra 1(this is the 9th grade course) and CP Algebra 1 Part 1 (regular 8th grade math, it's the first half of algebra 1 with some other stuff mixed in there like geometry and exponents). I had the most incredible cooperating teacher and she taught me so much! She's a true inspiration and model for the kind of teacher I hope to me. Together we worked on incorporating technology and incorporating engaging lessons in the classroom. My inspiration to teach comes from when I was a little girl - my mother has been teaching for 39 years now and I basically grew up with my own classroom in my house! My love for teaching math came in college. I have always been convinced I wanted to teach high school, but I spent all of my student teaching in a middle school 8th grade class. I feel very torn and still don't know which I want. I loved the middle school, but I never got to experience the high school - I hope to gain a feel for it through subbing this semester. During my free time, I like to clean and organize things, bake, cook, and do yoga/dance. I also love shopping but sometimes the funds stop me from it (oops) I think I"m a shopping addict (its a bad addiction). I cant wait for the semester to start because I am bored out of my mind!

Hi everyone! My name is Danielle Dworak. I was a student teacher at Sampson G. Smith Middle School in Franklin Township. I taught one general and two advanced 7th grade classes. I really enjoyed both of these classes but I found that I did prefer the advanced classes more due to teaching the 8th grade standards. I always thought I would want to teach high school, but after all my placements being in a middle school, I did fall in love with it so I am still uncertain where I want my end goal to be. I was offered a long-term substitute position for a teacher out on medical leave and started on January 2nd. I am teaching 8th grade Exploring Math and 6th grade Money Matters. These are considered "extended" classes which is pretty different from the standard math classroom setting however my students are great and I am adjusting well. Overall, it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up! My hobbies include traveling and reading. While I am not a sightseer, I love the beach and traveling to a new one every summer is my goal. I look forward to this semester and having a class as a cohort once again!

I was student teaching this past semester in Rahway NJ for 8th grade Algebra (honors and inclusion). I had the best experience, the best teacher, and the best students. It’s exactly the type of district I want to teach in for my future career. I plan to also be certified in Special Education- I myself have a LD and feel I can really connect with my students and help them succeed and love math! I started out in Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers for my BFA and had an early quarter life crisis as I was about to finish up and changed to math. My hobbies include yoga, baking, visiting museums, and I am a HUGE New Jersey Devils fan. I also love to tell jokes, so get ready!

Hey guys! My name is Amy Palacios. I was a student teacher at Bound Brook High School. During the fall semester I taught Algebra 1 and 2 Resources, one basic arithmetic course for students with behavioral disabilities and one ICS Algebra 2 CP course. I really loved working with these students. They were different and interesting to get to know and teach. Currently I am working part-time as a math co-teacher at Hatikvah International Academy Charter School. The students are middle school (7 and 8) and are high-achieving math students. They are working well into algebra 1 and 2 topics (topics I was still teaching my students at Bound Brook HS). My experiences at this charter school are great. I love the environment, the students, and the math. It leaves me quite torn on what kind of a teacher and what kind of school/students I want to work with. The students right now are challenging me with whys and hows of algebra 1 and 2 and I absolutely love it. They are eager to understand and reflect on their thinking and I am eager to rise to their challenge, and teach them to love math as I do. I hope this course can help me along the way. When I am not in school or learning more about math I like to spend my time playing video games, and board games (My love of Catan has gotten me into some hot water though) with my siblings or friends. I am also into reading comics and have just recently started crocheting to keep busy as well.

I was really lucky to have such an amazing CT and will hopefully work with her in the future (when she opens her own ALC, probably). I'm working at NBMS this spring as well, supporting a leave replacement two days a week. After we graduate, I want to work in a high school because although I really love middle-school aged students, I miss teaching higher-level maths.
Outside of Rutgers, I'm a Catalyst tutor and bootcamp instructor, focusing on SAT/ACT, math, and writing skills. I did my student teaching in Franklin Middle school with the same cooperating teacher for the past two semesters which was great. I was in an 8th grade math classroom (2 general ed classes, and 1 ICR class) and learned that I don't mind middle school aged kids, I actually loved teaching them. I always wanted to teach in a high school because I wanted to teach higher level math, but now middle school is definitely an option for me as well. I loved working in the Franklin district, its a great district and I felt very welcomed and apart of everything that went on in the school. The Franklin district is definitely somewhere I will be applying for a job. I will be starting to substitute in Franklin and Bound Brooke soon, while continuing to do in home tutoring sessions with various aged students.
Some of the things I enjoy doing when I am not in school or working is going to the gym, hiking, watching shows, and driving back up to Vermont to visit family.

Kept you waiting, huh?

My name is Kyle O'Brien. I did my student teaching experience in Parsippany Central Middle School. The classes I taught were for 7th grade; the levels I taught were Advanced, Regular, and Inclusive. One of the things that I loved about Parsippany's math department was the implementation of a "Basic Skills" level of Math where a fixed amount of time each week was spent on reinforcing foundation topics such as integer operations or fractions and decimals. Although I loved my experience in CMS, I definitely want to transition into a high school when I start teaching full time.
During my time in undergrad, I was performed in the Rutgers University Glee Club. I love music almost as much as I love math and will take any opportunity I can to perform. When I want a low key evening, you can find me playing any video game I can get my hands on.,
