Especially as a teacher, you may have expectations that cannot be met, because you and the student are coming from culturally different places where the same word means two different things. Example: eye contact as mentioned before. I think that when you're working with students from the same culture as you developing a relationship can be second nature, and you might fancy yourself excellent at building relationships, but then you work with someone who is different from you in every way and trust needs to happen before the relationship and that takes time.
