Module 0: Who Was I

At the beginning of my journey as an Atenean, it was my determination and dedication to study in my dream university that kept me continuing despite being surrounded by unfamiliar faces. When I first entered Ateneo, I had no friends or even acquaintances. As a socially awkward person, I admit it was a little scary to be in a place where I knew no one, especially coming from a school where most people knew me. Yet, strangely, I love the feeling of the new environment and seeing new faces. I love creating new routines, making new friends, and getting involved. It was like starting my life all over again in a new city to make new experiences. It was a breath of fresh air. However, it was not my initial plan to study in Ateneo, instead to enroll in the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) Tagum for college. There were conversations that happened between me and my parents. I remember what my father said to me, "Desidido man kaayo ka muskwela ug Ateneo, maong gi supportahan ka namo." In fact, my mom was a bit skeptical since it would be my first time to be away from home. She even said to me in verbatim, "Pag sure dira Ysette oy! Kaya diay nimo?" Yet, I was not even discouraged but challenged instead. There were doubts, admittedly. Will I endure the pressure of college alone without my parents by my side? Will I handle the demands of both school and my personal life? Will I be comfortable in my new environment? These were a few out of many questions that were running in my head. The discomfort that I was feeling comes from the fact that I will be away from my comfort zone. Yet, I am also certainly aware that this only forces me to grow, acquire new skills, and learn new things. It is exciting to experience life in a setting you do not recognize. And that was what I was feeling. For the past four years, I have never regretted my decision of choosing Ateneo. I did not expect to become the person I am today. I learned more than what was in the textbooks and lectures, I learned great values, skills, and perspectives that surely have become a part of me.

Among all the gifts I have nurtured, I believe the most important would be my values. The values I have acquired throughout my journey in Ateneo would help me sustain and overcome the difficulties in both my personal and professional fields. Without these values, I am certain that I would easily give up when the demands and pressure are extreme. It is through my values that I would continuously and constantly sharpen and nurture my knowledge and skills. My values would serve as my foundation for attaining my professional purpose and personal mission.

What does formation mean to me? Have I allowed myself to be formed by Ateneo?

1.) In my experience, I believe that formation is the formation of values, instilling Atenean values particularly. The paradigm of the Ateneo institution has been gradually established within and part of us. The formation, in Atenean way, means solidifying who you are as a unique individual person, finding your true purpose, and strengthening your values, motivation, and intention so that we will never be lost when we embark on our journey alone on especially after we graduate.

2.) Yes, I firmly believe that I allowed myself to be formed and I have been formed because I can certainly say that I am not the same person when I first entered Ateneo in comparison to who I am now. The values, beliefs, and perspectives I had before were changed and altered. Admittedly, I did not expect the changes that happened to me, but I am glad that they made positive and beneficial impacts on how I approach and perceive life and society.

Of all the themes, concepts, and content in the presentation on Looking beyond the Self, which do you think you have learned about the most? What do you think could be the reason it has left a mark on you until now?

I believe that the content in the presentation that left a deep mark on me until now would be The Catholic Social Teachings. When I utter and hear these words, I immediately associate them with the Arrupe Social Formation courses I have taken during my initial years in Ateneo. The experiences I had during these courses have molded and shaped me into an individual who cares and loves God, others, and the environment. I vividly remember the moments we had when we were immersed in various communities, hearing the people's life stories, and learning from them. This is probably why it has left a mark on me deeply, because of the fact that I met people who I never thought I would encounter in my lifetime. An encounter that breaks into my life and enables me to see things, people, and the world anew. More than the stories and lessons I have learned, I valued the right relationships I must have among others. Thus, I can say these have truly impacted me.
