Semantic elements are things such as location, characters and props. The location for films set within the supernatural horror genre tend to be secluded houses/areas where there isn't many people around.

Syntactic elements are things such as the themes of the film and the plot.

I will be trying to create an eerie and dull atmosphere as this is something that is also common within the genre I am working in, so I may also film in Digbeth/The Custard Factory as the background would be interesting and also fit within what I want to do.

I will also be filming in school as part of my plot is set within school.

A young girl named Faith befriends a new girl called Hannah at her school, who everyone is avoiding because of the way she looks and dresses. They become friends but at times Hannah seems strange and not like everyone else, but Faith thinks it's just because she's new. Faith's friends tell her that they think there is something off about Hannah, but se brushes it off. One night after spending the day out together, Hannah suggests that Faith should stay at hers for the night because it's late and she doesn't think it's safe for Hannah to go travel home alone. Later on the night/early morning they are both still awake and Hannah suggests they go for a late night walk because they can't sleep. Something seems off about her to Faith but she agrees, and they go to the park. They end up in the forest in the park and Hannah tells Faith it's time for her to go, and that she was here to take over Faith's body. Hannah pushes her to the ground and says something that Faith doesn't understand, and she passes out. They end up switching bodies, and Hannah leaves Faith alone in the forest. Hannah's parents are aware of what she was doing, and when she returns home they decide it's time to go back to where they came from, and the next morning they're gone. When Faith wakes up, she goes to her best friends house and tries to explain what happened, but she doesn't believe her. Faith tries to tell other people, and people think she's going crazy because they don't believe what she's saying. She eventually gets taken away and nobody ever sees her again.

My plot fits within the genre I want to work in as Hannah turns out to be a demon, which is a well known supernatural being. and horror because of how eerie and creepy I plan to make the film.

Characters

The protagonist for my film is a young girl aged 17/18 as in horror films they usually always have an innocent young looking girl as the main character, and I think it's good to stick to this as it's one of the more well known conventions of a horror film.

I have also decided to have the villain as a young girl the same age as this isn't something you really see within horror films, and I wanted to make my film slightly different to anything else that's out there.

The Villain - Hannah

The Princess/Protagonist - Faith

Todorov's Theory

My story starts off as happy and normal (equilibrium) as Hannah and Faith first become friends and everything seems fine. Then there is a disruption, when Hannah asks Faith to stop at her house overnight, as this is when Hannah plans to take over.

Strauss' Theory

As Strauss' theory is based on binary opposites, in my story it's good vs. evil, as Faith is a good character and Hannah is secretly evil. (protagonist vs. antagonist)

Barthes' Theory

I think that my film would fit within the enigma code as throughout my film there is parts where Hannah is with her family and they are talking about what they are, without them saying it exactly, and there is also clues throughout. The audience would be trying to figure out what she is.

Hannah - A young girl aged 17. She has natural hair but gothic makeup, and tends to wear all black and not much colour as this is what she likes. Like Faith, she will be a student living at home with her parents, but as she's a demon nobody knows her real age.

Hannah's parents - In their 30s but they look much younger due to also being demons. They seem mysterious and aren't seen much, but dress smart whenever they are seen, and people seem to always be uncomfortable around them, apart from Faith. They are of a higher social class as they appear to be more mature and like they have money.

Faith's friends - A group of girls the same age as Faith and Hannah. They tell her that they think Hannah is weird and that something seems off about her. Their social class would be the same as Faith's and Hannah's.
