The Walt Disney Company’s Media and Entertainment Distribution division decided not to look for a new distribution deal. Instead they wanted to distribute their own content themselves. This birthed the Disney+ platform with a Disney-branded streaming service. Disney took this opportunity to establish themselves as platform owners in the streaming services marketplace. 
 
Disney left the Netflix Platform as a complementary actor, and then constructed an ecosystem of their own in which they had more leverage. Disney+ now hosts the content of theirs that Netflix had previously distributed. Their platform boasts the Disney, Pixar and Marvel films to expand the variety of content they can offer potentially new customers – and those customers who may move from the Netflix platform to the Disney+ platform in order to continue accessing Disney films and series.

Disney turning digital with Disney+ can be seen as a follower move after proven success from market leaders such Netflix and Hulu. Disney saw the necessity to digitalise in this way after seeing the success of its own films and shows streaming on Netflix. In this way Disney can learn from the mistakes of the leaders of the industry and is indeed projected to outlive most of its competitors. Disney’s timing with Disney+ thus can be called a follower and not a fast follower as might be in the case of Amazon prime video. 

The highest moneymakers for streaming service have often been content that has been produced by the streaming platform themselves. In this way Disney has a large advantage over its competitors due to its experience in film and tv long before streaming existed.
