Jesus, the son of God, was a religious leader who preached and performed God's work through teaching and healing. From our presentation, we learned that Mark, the son of Mary, connected short passages to describe Jesus and the miracles that he had done. He wrote in a newspaper-like feel, informing readers about Jesus’ work from his own viewpoint and opinion.

An example of him teaching is in Mark 4:2-8, " 2 And He was teaching them many things in parables, and was saying to them in His teaching, 3 “Listen to this! Behold, the sower went out to sow; 4 as he was sowing, some seed fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil. 6 And after the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it yielded no crop. 8 Other seeds fell into the good soil, and as they grew up and increased, they yielded a crop and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.”

As Mark recorded, Jesus was able to teach through stories during his travels. In this particular parable, Jesus explains how God's blessing and love is received if your heart has good intentions and respects him. You will flourish together with him under those conditions.

Furthermore, Jesus performed miracles as well.

In Mark 5:22 and 5:41-42, Mark explains, "22 One of the synagogue officials named Jairus *came up, and on seeing Him, *fell at His feet23 and *implored Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live...41 Taking the child by the hand, He *said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded.”

As you can see, Jesus performed a miracle by healing the little girl, even though others judged and ridiculed him. Jesus spread the word and love of God through miracles and teachings, and it was all recorded by Mark.

I chose water as my Padlets' background, due to how Jesus was a miracle, just as water is. Being 100% God and human is definitely a miracle, and the waves represent the same uniqueness, as each wave in the ocean is different and special. Furthermore, Jesus walked on water, and this ties in Jesus' connection to water in the Bible and how he performed miracles.

Yancey quotes on page fifteen of The Jesus I Thought I Knew, "Those in authority, whether religious or political, regarded him as a troublemaker, a disturber of the peace. He spoke and acted like a revolutionary."

Growing up with a Christianity based education, he had always learned that Jesus was a perfect and almighty figure. However, what he soon came to realise was that he performed these perfect and miraculous miracles through defying certain aspects of the system and disturbing the sinful areas of peace. He thought of Jesus as a “troublemaker”, who defied certain parts of society for the greater good.

Adding on, in Chapter 11 and page 219 he describes, "Scars never completely go away, but neither do they hurt any longer...We will have a new start, an Easter start."

Previously, Yancey had described Jesus' death and resurrection and how the celebration of Easter was such a staple part of his life. Death is seen to be so finalised, so the mere thought of Jesus' resurrection and living on calms him. The scars that Jesus received from his suffering on earth are part of him, and so is the suffering that Yancey experiences. He realised that Jesus died for the forgiveness of human sin, and made the concept of living on possible, which he holds onto dearly. He is grateful for Jesus, since he knows that death is not finite and that he will see his loved ones that passed away again.

Biblical traditions has helped me to adapt my views on Jesus and his work. Growing up with a Lutheran and religiously based education and lifestyle, I had never really thought of Jesus as a troublemaker before, like Yancey mentioned in his book, The Jesus I Thought I Knew. He was a perfect symbol of love and positive change, and I had never noticed that he created change by defying social norms and essentially rebelling. Yancey has opened my eyes to the fact that change is messy, and disrupting your community may need to happen in order for the greater good; Jesus defied parts of society to spread God's love.

Adding on, the book of Mark and the stories that Jesus said has taught me to read these passages carefully. Before, I would have understood the surface of the parables he explained, but after thinking deeper I realised how Jesus' stories had multiple teachings within an overarching theme. He was extremely detailed and concise with his storytelling, which made people follow him in admiration. For example, with the previous question I mentioned the story about the crops and how a good heart causes them to grow. I would of never thought about thinking about the meaning of the story myself, and would just read what Jesus mentions after the story. However, now I have learned that adding my own insight could make it applicable to my own life. If I treat others with love and respect, it will come full cycle and I will recieve good experiences as well.
