Split Apple Rock, New Zealand

The Split Apple Rock in New Zealand is a very popular tourist attraction and may not have formed how you thought it would. This rock was once solid but over 120 million years ago during the ice age, water in the cracks of the rock froze over and expanded the rock, causing it to crack open. This natural phenomenon is called ice wedging. This rock is now very popular and you can even go and look at it during low tide! You can also explore other rocks around it that may have also split or have had other things occur to them.

Earthstory. “Earthstory.” Tumblr, 18 Dec. 2015, the-earth-story.com/post/135416022784/split-apple-rock-sitting-pretty-just-off.

The Grand Canyon has been eroded over millions of years by water and wind. The wind is what i will talk about here because without the wind, the grand canyon would look way different. Wind plays a prominent role in the making of this canyon. The wind caused the surface of the sedimentary rocks to become exposed and erode over time.

Monument Valley in Arizona is a great example of wind erosion. There are many sandstone pillars here that were caused through wind, water, and ice erosion but i'm only going to talk about the wind part. This valley has been eroded with wind for millions of years, helping ti form the pillars. The jagged parts of this rock structure at the top is from the wind blowing against it.

Yorkshire, UK is an example of water weathering and erosion. On the coast of this city, coastal erosion is happening. The waves are colliding against the dirt and rocks and over time, the whole side of this cliff turned into mud. Since it had no stability, parts started collapsing over a short period of time. Roads and even houses have been destroyed and residents who live there say "There's no coming back." Another factor in this happening is actually climate change, which is seriously exacerbating this situation.

EAST YORKSHIRE COASTAL EROSION - SOME BASICS. urbanrim.org.uk/Holderness.htm.

The Amazon Rain forest is a great example of human erosion. Humans have turned most of this rainforest into an empty wasteland. In the last year, over 400 million trees were chopped down. This greatly disrupts the soil and it even leaves native Americans without a place to live in. This picture is just one example of what the Amazon rainforest looks like right now.

Watts, Jonathan. “Human Activity and Drought ‘Degrading More Than a Third of Amazon Rainforest.’” The Guardian, 26 Jan. 2023, www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jan/26/human-activity-and-drought-degrading-more-than-a-third-of-amazon-rainforest.

The North Antelope Rochelle Mine in Wyoming is an example of Human Erosion. This mine is not only a coal mine but actually the biggest coal mine in the world. It produces about 85 million tons of coal yearly. All this mining causes very bad effects like the destruction of trees and plants, and also disrupts the roots that help stabilize the soil. This also causes erosion rates to speed up drastically, almost 100 times more than usual!

Xianren Bridge is a form of Water Erosion and is a very interesting and exciting example of this. This arch is the most prominent sea arch in the world. This is something that people call a "Fairy Arch". This arch is about 400 feet long and was carved by the Buliu River. The limestone karst in the rock was able to be carved through by the flowing water of this river. It is a very beautiful site to see. This bridge took millions of years to form.

Yosemite National Park may not seem like a place to have ice erosion, but it does. This National Park only has 2 glaciers left but they are both very important to the ecosystem around it. The Lyell and Maclure glaciers provide water to the ecosystems around them and they also remove rock and debris as they move. These glaciers have also gone through plucking and abrasion over time.

This temple in Cambodia was built in the 12th century and is now overrun with trees, plants, and other shrubbery. These plants have totally covered the temple to make it look very mysterious and old. This happened once the temple was abandoned, and the trees and plants grew in between the loose stones.

Piddock shells are a type of animal that cause biological erosion. They have teeth and burrow into the rock. They will slowly scrape it away or use some sort of acid they have to dissolve the rock. Once they die, the rock with many holes in get gets eroded by waves and eventually turns into small pebbles.
