Participatory art can evoke a wide range of emotions in participants, which may include joy, curiosity, empathy, surprise, and sometimes even discomfort as the participant responds to the challenges or ideas presented by the artwork. Audience participation in the arts is a multi-layered, personalised and emotionally rich experience. The audience's intuition, gut reactions and emotional responses together shape the way they interact with the artwork, and this interaction can profoundly affect their understanding and appreciation of the art. As a result, artists and curators often consider how to channel the viewer's sense of engagement in order to create richer and deeper art experiences.
In terms of the vast participatory art that is JR, the completion of the volunteers and the destruction of the audience are both a part of this.
In terms of the wishlamp project, the elements of the brushes and the Kongming lanterns carry a traditional Chinese emotional attachment, and viewers can find their own stories, interpretations and emotions in the artworks. This personal experience is unique and everyone may feel and react differently. Viewers can interpret and feel the artworks through their own experiences and emotions.

Examples of participatory art range from interactive installations in galleries and museums to public art projects that engage whole communities. Some notable participatory artists include Yoko Ono, Marina Abramovic, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Tino Segal. These artists create works that stimulate emotional responses, promote collaboration, and invite the audience to actively participate in the art-making process, redefining the relationship between art, artist and audience.

As a Red Hat in this process, I would selectively discard some of the rational content and think more intuitively and emotionally as a priority. I will think about what emotional value a certain kind of participation in art or performance can provide to the audience. I will also try to look at the same piece of art from the perspective of different groups of people.

Over emphasis on the participation may lead to mutilating what originally made it special. And at worst the whole art piece may be destroyed. The artist's "way of seeing" will be lost when we decide to make them open-ended art practices.

Black hat:

Deprived people and the disabled group may not be able to attend such events due to the cost of living.

Reflection

It is the first time for me to work in a group using the 6 thinking hats to challenge and question a discipline. As I choose the black hat, I started to think about the negative sides of current trends. And then I realized that the emphasis on the participation of viewers and spectators may lead to multiple risks and difficulties. For example, due to different groups of people, like the deprived group and the group of older people, the accessibility for all people must be taken into consideration. The black hat’s thinking let me to embrace continuous improvement and become more considerate. From my peers’ research, I can also learn cross-discipline knowledge and ideas based on different hats. I think it will also work by individuals, moving outside habitual ways of thinking, trying out different approaches, and then think constructively about how to move forward and improve our projects. Always keep exploring several ways of viewing a theme. Break our habitual thoughts and get something fresh.

Compared to some static

Sense of the Unknown: "Wishlamp" emphasizes family interaction, where the artwork itself is merely a medium, only becoming an art piece when family members collaborate in its creation. Depending on the different perspectives and interests of each family member, they interpret the artwork in their unique way. Everyone can interact with the art in their own personalized way, leading to a deeper understanding, contemplation, and connection with the artwork. Until the audience completes their participation, the final appearance of the entire artwork remains unknown.

Sense of Fun: "Wishlamp" encourages the audience to become co-creators of the artwork. Viewers can influence the display and evolution of the artwork through their actions, sounds, touches, and other interactions, allowing them to express their creativity in the artistic process.

Leaving a Lasting Impression: Audiences often remember artworks they actively engage with more vividly because they are not merely spectators but participants. Involvement in the artwork can also enhance the emotional connection between the audience and the artwork. Even if, due to some audience actions, installations get damaged – as seen in JR's work, which was damaged shortly after its installation – it can, to some extent, highlight the fragility of cultural heritage and raise awareness about the importance of preserving artistic and cultural treasures, prompting people to contemplate the value and protection of art.

In conclusion, participation in art often stimulates social interaction among the audience. They can share their experiences and viewpoints with other viewers, facilitating dialogue and communication, thereby creating a more enriching and enjoyable artistic experience.

So I'm thinking that for artworks one can try to integrate with this media, which can greatly reduce the limitation of being in a specific space with a small audience. For example, tiktok's VR interaction, video vibration function, and artist Shikun Wang's art form of remote control of the work.
