Lost Cove is on the tip of Southern California. They have super sunny days, rain that  leaks through the house, and fog along the beach. Jude and Noah live by a beach and an enormous forest. 

In the story, it describes the story in a lot of detail. Here are some examples:
  • "The fog's mostly burned off down here..."
  • "Surrounded by water on all three sides and forest everywhere else, Lost Cove is the end, the farthest point west you could go."
  • "September washes away, then October. By November, even Dad can't stop on top of it, which means it's pretty much raining inside as well as outside the house."
  • "Outside, the sunlight has gathered from all corners of the earth."
The setting is very important to the plot because Noah would run in the forest with his friend Brian and spend hours there and that's where they first kissed. Also, Jude was a surfer and that's where she met a lot of the popular people. Noah would be thrown off the cliffs and would cliff jump into the ocean. The rain would collect in buckets in their house, and when the twins were mad at each other they would dump in on each other's carpets.

Even though they are both the protagonists, they were each others best friends and worst enemies. They both would ignore each other, do things against each other, and are always upset with each other over something. 

Here is an  example from the book:
During a bad rainy, the family had buckets in each room of the house to keep the rain from getting on the carpet. At this moment in time, the twins were going through a really tough time. 
"I drop through the house, a raincloud, dutifully kicking over a bucket by Jude's bedroom so the dirty water soaks into her fluffy white carpet." This was Noah's point of view. Later on in his chapter this happens, "Once inside, I go to my room, noting that Jude knocked over a water bucket." 

Moments like this happened all throughout the story. Also that stuff happens for a reason; even if you don't want it to happen. 

In the story, many things happened to Jude and Noah. Each of the twins only had one part of the story; those point of views eventually connected into one big story. During the story, Noah and Jude's mom had gotten into an accident and passed away. Noah blamed himself for her death and Jude blamed herself for her death, based on two actions that happened right before the crash. Eventually, the crash lead to a connection with Jude's new boyfriend and her mentor. 

Also Brian kissed Noah in his bedroom. They were about to take it a step further, but Noah's mom walked in before that could happen and Brian left. Later that day, Noah saw Brian with another girl. This lead to Noah shouting out that Brain was gay. Brian was mortified, which lead to him not talking to Noah. Brian is originally from Northern California, and he stayed down in Lost Cove for the breaks. Because of what Noah did, it lead to Brian speaking out to his baseball team and school about being gay. Instead of the reaction of rejection, he was given the reaction of acceptation. Eventually, Noah and Brian get back together. 

The first example shows that you need to look at the whole story, and not just one part. During the whole story, Noah and Jude had a lot of miscommunication. This makes it so each twin only has their side of the story; this causes a lot of fights between the two.

Examples of this conflict are below: 
Brian went into the closet with Jude for '7 minutes in heaven'. Noah thinks that Brian likes Jude and that they kissed in the closet; this was not the kiss. Jude later talked with Noah about this and this is the conversation they had. "Nothing happened you hear me?..... I get in the closet, he told me about something called a globular cluster, I think." Before this, Noah ripped papers of Jude's and scattered them everywhere because he thought something had happened.

The book is styled unlike any other book I've read before. Each chapter is from one of the twin's point of view. The unique thing about this though, is that there is a three year difference between each twin's chapter. This book shows the struggles that Noah and Jude face. Struggles like finding their identity, dealing with death, and their own personal problems. As you switch between the years, you see how each character had changed. You also slowly see things connect from the beginning to the end. This story showed the struggles that teens in this year would face and it was very believable. The book had many twists and turns, which always kept you engaged. 16: "He killed her."

The first quote shows how his relationship with his mom was really rough. Also that she was not a good person. This was said after the affair happened. The second quote shows during a time of pain, he blamed someone else for 'killing' his mom.

For Jude, she is a very determined and hard working girl who never gives up. An example of this is when she was creating her stone sculpture. She cut herself, bruised herself and even scraped up her whole hand. Even though she went through all of that, she pushed on and got a beautiful sculpture. Many people followed Jude because of her popularity, but also because she goes all in. She surfs, cliff jumps, but also can break down walls or stubborn people. For Noah, he is very artistic and trustworthy. An example of this is Noah caught his mom having an affair on his dad. Instead of telling his dad that she was cheating on him, he covered it up after she died. But he's not all that trustworthy because he did leak Brian's biggest secret. He was more of a follower than a leader, but he did show leadership quality at some points in the book. Jude can talk with her mom and grandmother's spirits. They both effect her artwork a the school she goes to, CSA. Her mom especially likes to knock over any of her sculptures and brake them. Her grandmother left her a 'bible' with little sayings to live by. This effects they way Jude acts in certain situations. 

An example of this was during a sculpture present ion at CSA. "....the table beneath Broken Me-Blob No. 8 gives way and my self-portrait tumbles to the floor and shatters into pieces. Again.' That's cold' I tell my mom in my mind."
