         <title>1.Missouri Compromise of 1820</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Congress couldn't decide if Missouri should enter as a slave or free state because it could ruin the balance of the states. Congress solved this problem with the Missouri Compromise, that admitted Missouri  as a slave state and Maine as a free state.          <description><![CDATA[<div>James Polk sent a bill to Congress asking for funds for the war with Mexico and David Wilmot added an amendment called the Wilmot Proviso to the bill, which said that any land acquired from Mexico will not have slavery. Southerners very strongly opposed this amendment.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Senator Henry Clay made a plan to stop the deadlock over California. California would be admitted as a free state then it would be the choice of New Mexico and Utah to chose whether to allow slavery. His plan ended the slave trade in Washington D.C. and called for a fugitive slave law.          <description><![CDATA[<div>The Fugitive Slave Act said a slaveholder could recapture a runaway slave and anyone who helped a slave escape, or refused to help slave catchers, would be jailed.          <description><![CDATA[<div> Stephen Douglas introduced a bill to have a railroad built to California. To do this he thought that the Great Plains need to be organized into the Nebraska Territory. So he made a bill called the Kansas-Nebraska Act which created the Kansas and Nebraska territory.          <description><![CDATA[<div>After the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed many people settled in Kansas and settlers in Kansas supported slavery or were against it. Conflict with slavery turned violent so pro slavery people invaded Lawrence, the home of the antislavery government. He planned to take a federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, and then arm all the slaves with weapons for a rebellion to end slavery and this was launched in 1859. All the Republicans supported Abraham Lincoln while Northern Democrats nominated Stephen Douglas but Southern Democrats liked John C. Breckinridge but the Constitutional Union Party wanted John Bell. In the end, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the president with 40 percent of the votes which were all cast in the North.
