Another disease that isn't mentioned in the book is Aplastic anemia. It is a condition caused by your body not producing enough blood cells. This disease can leave you feeling fatigued and more prone to infections and uncontrolled bleeding. This rare disease can develop at any age. Blood transfusions are a great way to combat this disease, some medications may help too.
Advances in modern medication and food have greatly extended the human expected lifespan. This will inevitably form a more comfortable environment for humans to thrive and populate. The easier humans can live, the more of them there will be.
Humans take up a lot of space. There is 8 billion of us, after all. Humans are natural destroyers. We destroy habitats to make our own. This affects the population of animals and plants who lived there previously and their ability to thrive in that location. We have driven many species to extinction and many more to the edge.

The human population is 8 billion now. However in 1900 there were fewer than 2 billion. The silent generation, and the baby boomers brought about a population boom, hence why the number increased so much. With a growth in human population, wildlife has decreased in numbers. This is due to hunting, poaching, and the keeping of non-domestic animals such as tigers. With the increase in human population we are in need of more food, therefore we need more livestock and we hunt more frequently. With hunting animals such as deer, we continue to keep their population in check. Deer and rabbits will reproduce and double or triple the population. With hunting both for sport and food we reduce this annually to close to original numbers. keeping the deer and rabbit population in check keeps the plant populations higher, as well as allows us to survive.

The increase of the human population has led to an increase in the extraction of resources from the environment causing negative impacts on our ecosystem such as increase in erosion, reduction of nutrient levels, and etc. This will in the future lead most likely to a decrease in the human population due to us relying and taking advantage of nature for survival.

Growth in the global human population poses a threat to the regulation of nonhuman populations. As shown in figure 2 of the introduction, humanity demands more Earths than we have, and that number is continuing to grow. These demands are not just of land, but they affect every ecosystem on it too. Development is growing due to growth in human population, but more importantly it is growing into homes of nonhuman populations. This rapid growth is exceeding the capacity of nonhuman and human populations coexisting. Additionally, human population growth leads to an increase in hunting numbers which can and has led to the extinction of other species. Therefore, the rapid increase in human populations is difficult for natural regulation of nonhuman populations.

Human population is growing at such a massive rate the environment around us from which our ancestors lived off of exclusively is threatened. The advancements in medicine through our understanding of molecular biology has extended life expectancy and allowed for more people to live on the earth longer, as on page 5 the book states that our life expectancy has grown roughly thirty years from 1900 to 2000. All of this is well and good except that while using our knowledge of molecular biology to extend our knowledge in medicine, we as a species have still done what we always have in harvesting the nature around us as we please. 200,000 years ago this wasn't a big deal as there was an abundance compared to what the human population could harvest but now has become a problem because we have ignored the regulations of life as a whole, the "Serengeti rule" harming hundreds of species causing them to go near extinction, so if we don't figure out a way as a species how to balance and regulate our own population the whole of earth will suffer as a whole.

The growth of the human population has negatively affected the natural regulation of the non-human population. The human population has grown so significantly that many animals and other organisms have become endangered because we are taking away their habitat and natural environments. When humans clear out whole forests and the natural wildlife in an area to either build shopping centers or housing, it forces those animals to either adapt to a new home, or they will die off. Humans also use the same resources as animals, and do not care if there is not enough water or food for the animals in the same area. Humans also create pollution which contaminates the resources and habitats of these animals, which eventually slims their population size down. All of the reasons are how humans decrease the population of other organisms just trying to exist on Earth.
