A Summoner as a person is one who behaves corruptly, working for the church. They’re job is to collect money to put towards the church. They act in fraudulent ways by keeping the majority of the money for themselves. 


Why do the Friar and the Summoner begin to argue? Why are they mad at each other? The summoner was mad at the Friar for interrupting and the Friar told the story of a summoner in order to insult his motivation for serving the church. This turned into a conflict of whose life was morally led correctly, and who truly lived with motivation of greed and dishonestly.

He describes the depressing overtones explaining, “It is a sad commentary on the clergy that, in the Middle Ages, this class that was responsible for morality was often the class most marked by corruption.” He details this short story as simply a metaphor that highlights the conflict between the Clergy and their temptations of the powers of religion. Knapp continues to highlight the poverty in which cursed the majority of the clergy, causing a need to look outward for such royalties. Something such as committing fraud in the name of religion seemed horrid on paper, yet acceptable when overcoming the miseries on poverty. It includes people of the lower class such as peasants, priests, and wives. They use comedy to teach a lesson about morality, that everyone should acknowledge the amount of evil they possess, even if it may be small. Also allusion was used when the friar made multiple references to biblical characters such as Moses, Jesus Christ, and Aaron as excuses to his fasting.
