Janie is an only child who grew up in Florida during the early 1900s. Throughout her life, Janie has hoped for a good husband, someone to make her feel special, and yet still be able to maintain her independence and freedom of voice. In the passages portrayed, we see Janie's voice really shine through as she stands up to character throughout the novel.

There are times in life that if you hold yourself back, dire consequences could ensue. This was one of those times. I looked at Tea Cake and decided to try one last time. "'Tea Cake, put down dat gun and go back tuh bed!'" After that, I knew it was no use. I pulled the trigger. "Tea Cake crumpled as his bullet buried itself in the joist over Janie's head." 184

Dave Sutton

Summary

The novel's point of view on voice is based around the development of one's very own. It is focused around Janie's experience of learning not to let anything muffle her opinions, but also knowing when to say certain things and when not to. We see a similar take on the theme of voice in Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman." This is achieved via Biff developing his voice and standing up to the unrealistic dreams of his father:
"BIFF (crying, broken): Will you let me go, for Christ’s sake? Will
you take that phony dream and burn it before something happens?
(Struggling to contain himself, he pulls away and moves
to the stairs.)"
In this dramatic scene, we see a Biff that is finally able to confront his father on a topic that has seemingly bothered him for a long time. This is relatable to how Janie confronts other characters throughout the novel.
