Most often she cited 1901 as her birth year, but the census of 1900 lists a Zora L. Hurston, born in 1891, as the daughter of John and Lucy Hurtson. After her mother’s death at age nine, Zora had a tough transient childhood.  All the more surprising, therefore that she made it to college.  She attended Howard University in Washington D.C from 1919 - 1924.  While there, she was accepted as a member of Stylus, the campus literary club, where she published her first short story, “John Redding Goes to Sea,”. Three years after writing her first short story Charles S. Johnson's Opportunity, a major literary vehicle for writers of the Harlem Renaissance published two of Hurtson's stories, “Drenched in Light” and “Spunk.” In these early stories she staked out a perspective characteristic of her later African American folktales. Throughout the Harlem Renaissance, Zora encouraged and spoke about African American culture through her writing. In 1925, after winning an award for “Spunk,” Hurston moved to New York City, where she joined other writers and artists of the Harlem Renaissance. By the mid-1930s Hurston had begun to reach her stride. Her first novel, Jonah's Gourd Vine, was published in 1934. Later in her career, she wrote a few more books including Their Eyes Were Watching God [1937] and Dust Tracks On A Road [1942]. Before having to work a separate job as an educator in Florida.
