John J. Pershing started his life on a farm in Missouri where he originally pursued a career in education and only choose to join the military because he could get a free education out of it. He preformed well at the famous West Point military school and was selected for a leadership position where he would eventually reach the highest rank possible for a cadet. Pershing first served in the Spanish American war where he was recognized for his courage and leadership abilities, he was also recognized by his commanding officer as “cool as a bowl of cracked ice” under fire. What made him stand out above all was how Pershing handled the Moro in the Philippines. Rather than inserting more U.S. soldiers in the Philippines, he chose to lower the level of violence. He helped the Filipinos develop a court system and recruited law enforcement, reformed laws and made money to build schools and trading post for the economy, and personally learned the Moro dialect as well as getting to know the Muslim leaders to build a relationship with them. He was able to defeat the Moro in the Philippines without violence and make them an ally to the U.S. Theodore Roosevelt promoted Pershing to brigadier general from captain bypassing over 800 senior officers, where promotions were usually based off seniority. At the start of American involvement in World War 1 Pershing became the commander of the American Expeditionary forces and now was tasked with a war no one had faced before. The army was to go from just 200,000 men to over two million the biggest army America had to manage. This huge increase would cause a number of problems that Pershing would have to face such as, training all the new soldiers in warfare he was not familiar with himself, controlling such a large army, the logistics of supplying the army across the ocean (the first war U.S. soldiers fought on foreign soil) and, as this war was the first modern war Pershing had to adapt to the new warfare and catch-up with the others who had already been fighting and evolving for 3 years.
