"Parents need to know that FETCH! LUNCH RUSH is a fun, novel way to play an educational game in "augmented reality." It isn't a game app that most kids will be able to get started playing without some help from a parent or teacher. Game pieces need to be sent to an email address, printed, and cut out before kids can even begin to play. Players place the game pieces on the ground or on a wall and view them through the mobile device's camera to select answers to the questions on the screen and help the adorable Ruff Ruffman get sushi for his crew. This can be a single- or multi-player game. To get the correct pieces of sushi, players must solve the math problems on the screen. This app was funded by the U.S. Department of Education to supplement first- and second-grade math education."

Instructions aren't crystal clear on some of the game functions. The back camera on the device needs to be used, but players may point with the front screen, unsure of how to actually record the code on the game pieces.

Tapping the sushi images on the game screen to submit the answer is not clearly explained in the game. A certain amount of experimentation may be expected, but first and second graders might be confused by not seeing step by step instructions.

Losing one of the game pieces may be too easy to do. The game pieces are printed pieces of paper and a child may have trouble keeping the pieces together as a set. One reviewer suggested that parents laminate the pieces of paper to help with durability.

If they answer incorrectly, there is no penalty - they can try again.

The equations get progressively harder as the child succeeds, so there is an incentive to work harder on the more challenging mathematical equations.

The game can be played in a single or multi-player version. Teams can be created, with the game pieces placed throughout a room. Running to find the right answer to scan can be part of the fun.

This examination of augmented reality features the educational iOS app, FETCH! LUNCH RUSH. It teaches math skills to elementary school aged children and was created by PBS, with funding from the US Dept. of Education. Before delving into the game, reviewing the definition of augmented reality seems a helpful way to start. This is the definition given in Wikipedia:

Augmented Reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.

The technical review website, EdSurge, writes:

Augmented Reality (AR) content can be accessed by scanning or viewing a trigger image with a mobile device that creates a subsequent action. This action can be a video, another image, 3D Animations, Games, QR code, or whatever you want it to be.

In fact, the technology behind augmented reality in the classroom began as technology that was used in the military and medical fields. Training troops with GPS data has evolved into a unique and playful school resource that can add a great deal of excitement in the classroom setting

An example of a training screen using augmented reality in the military:

Objective:
The main character, a dog named Ruff, is making a movie and has a movie crew on set that needs to be fed. The food they want to eat is sushi and the player's job is to perform mathematical equations so that everyone receives the correct amount of sushi.

Game Procedure:
Each game page presents a math equation that asks players to add or subtract pieces of sushi. Instead of typing the numerical answer, the player picks the correct answer from game pieces that have been printed out and cut up.
The game pieces have numbers on them, from 1 to 10. The player holds the back camera on their iOS device to the game piece with the answer they have decided is correct. The device reads a code that has also been printed on the game piece, similar to a QR code. In the game, the answer appears on top of the game screen.
The final step is to touch the onscreen sushi image to submit the answer.

Below are screen shots from the App Store, that will help illustrate the steps taken while playing the game.
