African elephants and Asian elephants are the two different species that are discovered in the world, but each have subspecies. The African elephant sub species are: the African Savannah, (Loxodonta Africana) and the African forest (Loxodonta cyclotis). The physical differences between the African forest elephant is that they are more slender, with rounded ears, a little smaller with a straighter and smaller tusk than the Asian elephants.
The Asian elephant has four subspecies: Sri Lankan, Indian, Sumatran and Malaysian. Each of these sub species have different characteristics. Sri Lankan elephants are seen to be skinnier with larger ears, and the male elephants are often tuskless. Indian elephants tend to be lighter-skinned, Sumatran elephants are sturdier built and Malaysian elephants are smaller in stature.

Elephants can detect water from up to 12 miles away! They are able to detect their water sources by using their trunk and smelling. Also, if the elephants can smell more than one water source, the matriarch will often lead them to the safest water hole.

Elephant skin is very sensitive despite how thick it appears. Think about this: When a fly lands on an elephant, they can feel it! Elephants have an absence of sweat glands. This is why they roll in the mud to add an extra layer to their skin to protect them from getting sun burns.

African elephants live in a matriarchal society. A herd is led by the most oldest knowledgeable female, because she's had the longest time to gather information of different environments such as where to go for food and water and how to respond and avoid variety of dangers. The herds are made up of mothers, sisters, aunts, daughters and sons who stay with the group until they're old enough to leave on their own. Elephants stay with their herd for life and sometimes if they do decide to leave, they at least stay for more than a decade to learn enough information to survive.
