I am Sr. Project Manager-Faculty Development at City Colleges of Chicago and periodically teach sociology as an adjunct instructor. City Colleges are the community college district here. In POD, I co-coordinate the DEI Liaisons group and am looking forward to learning from this group.

Our faculty and graduate student development initiatives weave equitable instructional strategies throughout our mini-courses and workshops. I'm always looking for new ways to help faculty thinking inclusively.

When I'm not on campus, I'm hiking, kayaking, running, camping, hanging out with my sons, loving on my cats.

I am currently serving as the director for the Washington Center for Improving Undergraduate Education - a public service center at the Evergreen State College. We have a broad portfolio that includes working with campuses of all types in all geographies to engage in action planning around equity projects. We are also home to Evergreen's Learning and Teaching Commons. I have been lurking with the E&E since before becoming a SIG. I'm hopeful to be able to engage more.

I am Dr. Ali Söken, and I earned my PhD this summer from the Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies department at UMass Amherst. I have a background in instructional design and educational technology, and I recently started working as a Faculty Consultant at the University of Oregon in the Teaching Engagement Program.

I’m originally from Turkey, and I come from a low-income, single-parent household. I’m passionate about education because I understand its transformative power, especially for people like me. In my new role, I hope to support international students and contribute to improving SoTL efforts at UO.

Inclusive teaching is central to my practice and I am excited to be part of this amazing group to improve my skills around equity and justice work.

Topics I'd like to explore: The issues at the intersection of AI and Equity.

In 2024, I attended the Institute for New Educational Developers (INED) since I’m currently applying for new, full-time roles in educational development, and looking forward to growing in an academic support career. As a GPPD grant recipient, I'll be attending the POD Network Conference this November in Chicago, where I’m excited to make further connections in the field. (I attended POD also in 2019 in Pittsburgh and in 2021, when it was held remotely.)

In terms of equity in education, I'm eager to join this SIG and learn/share with other educational developers. At CSSW, discussions around power, race, oppression, and privilege (PROP) are built into the curriculum. However, in my current student-facing role, I often encounter conflict between what the school explicitly promotes (a PROP "lens") and what it practices (white supremacy culture in academic expectations, especially around writing practices). Looking forward to a full-time career in educational development, I'm also interested in engaging with broader discussions around equity.

I work with great team members to provide programming, services, and grant funding to the CWRU teaching community in an effort to empower people to learn.

Specific to this SIG, our center supports inclusive engagement through a 14-week educational development collaborative each spring. We also provide grant funding for faculty projects that support inclusive excellence to improve student learning.

At Ivey, I'm part of a team that aims to build inclusive and meaningful learning experiences. I often collaborate with Ivey faculty to discuss challenges and opportunities around this aim, including how GenAI fits into the picture.

Priorities: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Accessibility (EDIA) + Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

The Equity & Education SIG critiques and addresses legacies of racism, colonization, oppression, privilege and power, and systemic inequity that negatively impact the experiences of students, instructors, and educational developers in higher education with the goal of changing individual and institutional practices and policies as they pertain to teaching and learning. 

The SIG promotes equity-mindedness as a critical, ongoing, reflective and action-oriented process of learning and practices. We ask, “how can we do better?” to inform a process toward equity work by facilitating peer mentoring, a learning community, and collaborative project work.

I've been a member of POD since 2016ish. Most of that time I've been a member of the PDC, which has afforded me some of the best professional relationships and mentoring of my career. Recently, I wrapped up my time co-leading the development of the Educational Developer Competency Toolkit.

I am also co-author of Learning That Matters: A Field Guide to Course Design for Transformative Education.
