I asked a mother who has recently found out that her 1st-grade child was diagnosed with a specific learning disability, " What was her initial reaction, what has changed?"
Her response was as follows:
"I always wondered why he couldn't read when all his peers were on their way and reading independently I knew something wasn't right when he couldn't even spell CAT for me. I was in shock when the school contacted, me I was even upset how dare they consider to put my son in special education! After the meeting, I was so disappointed how can my son a perfect, well-behaved child, so athletic that even plays baseball, and basketball have a learning disability? It took me about a month to come around. Now I am completely aware of what I need to do to help him succeed. As for how have things changed I would say I dedicate more time with him and we put homework first and sport second. I am positive that he will exit the special ed program before starting middle school."

After completing an interview with a mother that has worked with children with disabilities for many years, and has had proper training in the subject I was a bit taken back to listen to her initial reaction. I thought as professional her response would have been more accepting at first. This it when I realized maybe no one can be completely prepared until you actually live no matter how many trainings you take to prepare yourself you will never be completely prepared.
As teachers we must be as understanding and comforting as possible.
