Dance, an ancient form of artistic expression deeply rooted in tradition, has historically adhered to rigid gender norms, reflecting the prevailing heteronormativity of society. However, the dance landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, fueled by a burgeoning movement of LGBTQ+ and gender-fluid dancers who challenge and redefine traditional paradigms. This seismic shift towards inclusivity and diversity is revolutionizing the dance community on a global scale (Publow, 2022).

Traditionally, dance productions have perpetuated gender stereotypes, with men cast as dominant figures showcasing powerful and "masculine" movements, while women are often relegated to roles portraying delicate grace and poise. However, as societal attitudes evolve and embrace greater acceptance of diverse identities, dancers are embracing new forms of expression. Female dancers are now embodying strength, independence, and athleticism, while men explore and embrace their feminine qualities(Morad, 2016). Moreover, an increasing number of dancers are rejecting binary gender roles altogether, opting instead for a neutral identity that transcends traditional labels(Publow, 2022).

This paradigm shift towards inclusivity and gender diversity is palpable in the work of visionary choreographers who are boldly challenging heteronormative norms through their creations. Transgender choreographer Katy Pyle, founder of the groundbreaking company Ballez, is at the forefront of this movement. Pyle's innovative reinterpretations of classical ballet productions infuse them with LGBTQ+ themes, subverting traditional gender expectations and paving the way for greater representation and visibility of queer narratives on stage. Similarly, West African contemporary choreographer Fatou Cissé celebrates the richness of gender diversity in her works, creating powerful performances that highlight the unique identities and experiences of her dancers (Donovan, 2018).

In addition to choreographers, non-binary dancers are making significant strides in the industry, fearlessly embracing their authentic selves and inspiring others to do the same. Korean pole dancer Taewon's journey exemplifies this defiance of societal norms. Despite facing initial rejection due to his gender, Taewon persevered in his pursuit of pole dancing, ultimately challenging cultural stereotypes and reshaping perceptions of masculinity in the dance world. Similarly, LGBTQ+ icon Jojo Siwa's historic partnership with a female dance partner on "Dancing with the Stars" shattered gender boundaries and provided a platform for greater representation of diverse identities in mainstream media(Publow, 2022).

These trailblazing dancers and choreographers are not only reshaping the narrative of gender in dance but also fostering a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of the dance community. By courageously challenging traditional gender roles and stereotypes, they are paving the way for future generations of dancers to embrace their authentic selves and express their unique identities through movement (Burns & Thomas, 1994).

In conclusion, the dance world is experiencing a profound and transformative shift towards greater gender inclusivity and representation. As choreographers and dancers continue to push boundaries and redefine societal norms, dance emerges as a powerful vehicle for diversity, acceptance, and self-expression on the global stage. Embracing these changes will undoubtedly propel dance into a new era of creativity, innovation, and cultural resonance.

Plot setting: The story tells of a female protagonist who loves dancing very much and unfortunately gets injured in her leg in a car accident. However, she did not give up dancing as a result. With the encouragement and help of two good friends, she regained her stage. This is the protagonist's own strength, as well as the strength given to her by her two friends.

With modern dancers：In cooperation with them, expressing more space and inspiration will generally lean towards the improvisation part, but I currently have less involvement in the improvisation part of modern dance, making it difficult for me to create more improvisation. But the established choreography mode can achieve good dance effects even after a certain amount of rehearsal.

With Chinese dancers：Belonging to a unique dance style with distinct stylistic features, I performed a simple dance improvisation (along with Latin dance). In this creative process, the integration was relatively abrupt and difficult, possibly due to the obvious stylistic features. Adopting the established choreography mode will improve the arrangement effect.

With jazz dancers：I did not collaborate with jazz dancers this time, but I adopted the established choreography mode for simple choreography. I would prefer to use it for behind the scenes footage or transitions in movies, or to indicate the character's personality traits (active atmosphere type), rather than for the main choreography.

The most regrettable thing

My original idea for the final stage work of this movie was to find four girls who studied Chinese national standards to help me complete the final part of my movie. However, due to the short time and my misjudgment, it was difficult to find suitable dancers in a short time. But if I found four suitable girls, I think this movie would be perfect! So for now, let's treat those two boys as girls ♥️， I will make up for this small regret in my graduation work.
