Post 1- Walter- Character trait- Concieted

“What you need me to say you done right for? You the head of this family. You run our lives like you want to. It was your money and you did what you wanted with it. So what you need me to say it was all right for? So you butchered up a dream of mine—you—who always talking ‘bout your children’s dreams.” P. 94,95
In the play the main character Walter was conceited all throughout the play. This quote shows that Walter did not care about Mama using the money for the whole family, because he wanted it for himself. Walter wanted the money for a liquor store, but Mama used it to buy a bigger house for their family. So Walter tried to make Mama feel guilty for "crushing" his dreams. Therefore Walter is conceited because he wanted the money for himself.

“Something eating you up like a crazy man. Something more than me not giving you this money. The past few years I been watching it happen to you. You get all nervous acting and kind of wild in the eyes—“ p. 72
Even though Walter is conceited he is also demanding. Walter is demanding because even though Mama finally decided to give him some money he still wanted more. This evidence reveals that Mama even sees how crazy Walter is becoming, because he is not getting what he demanded. Also Walter is never satisfied with what he gets in life, so he just keeps on demanding for more and more. Overall, throughout the play Walter shows character traits of him being demanding and conceited.

After reading this play I do not sympathize Walter. I feel that Walter only cares about himself, and puts his needs in front of others. Usually the father of the family puts his wife's and children's needs first, but Walter on the other hand puts his first. Even though I do not sympathize Walter, I still believe that he is a good person. I believe that he is a good person because throughout the story he is trying to help his family become wealthy, but he still ends up hurting his family members but he does not do it intentionally. In Walters eyes he is just trying to help his family live a better life, but he does it in immature ways. Overall, even though I don't sympathize Walter I still believe that he is a good person.

The art that I chose is called "Ulster at the crossroads". I chose this painting because in the painting it shows vivid orange and red buildings and the colors red and orange represent anger, and in the play Walter is angry most of the time. Also in the painting there are dark areas and in Walter's life he went through a dark time when he lost the money that Mama gave him. Lastly the man in the picture looks like he is being tied down to one spot, and that is how Walter also feels because he is trapped in his job that he does not like. So overall, I chose this painting because it represents anger, dark times, and someone being stuck somewhere that they don't like.

"Difficult people,

Am I one of them?
Seeing, through shades, solo paradigm;
All must be questioned,
No-one immune
From suspect and doubt,
All but s/he out of tune.

Difficult people
Who get up your nose,
Creating disturbance where one seeks repose.
Each must be critiqued,
Some torn to shred,
In relentless pursuit
Of ‘last words’ to be said.

Difficult people,
Are they not sane,
Or suffering complaints of persona or brain,
Delusional grandeur,
Or insufferable phlegm?
Difficult people,
Am I one of them?"

The poem that I chose is by Richmal Byrne, and in the poem he talks about difficult people. This poem relates to Walter because Walter acts very difficult and stubborn when he does not get his way. Also in the poem Richmal states, "creating disturbance where one seeks repose"(lines 10-12). This relates to Walter because Walter always disturbs his family when everyone else is relaxed. Lastly this poem talks about how difficult people always bother people that are relaxed, and that is also what Walter does. Therefore, I chose this poem because it represents someone that is difficult and Walter is difficult.

I chose this song because after listening to it Kerri Hilson sounded very conceited, and that relates to Walter. For instance in her song when she sings "Get yourself together don't hate, jealously is the ugliest trait I can talk about it cause I know that I'm pretty!"(Lines 9-12). This shows that she is saying that she knows that she is pretty which makes her seem conceited because all throughout the song she only sings about how she knows she is pretty. This song relates to Walter because all throughout the play Walter is conceited and only cares about money. Therefore this song relates to Walter because Walter only cares about money, the same way she only cares about her looks.

The movie "Fences" and the play "A Raisin In The Sun" are alike because Troy and Walter are both the dominant people in their family. In Fences, Troy works hard to bring home money for his family the same way Walter does. Also Troy built a fence around his house that represents him protecting his family and always holding his family together, which Walter also tries to protect his family by trying to get a lot of money for his family. So the movie and poem can be compared because Troy and Walter both try very hard to protect their families.
Another way the movie and play are alike is Troy always goes on rants about life and so does Walter. Troy talks about wanting a better life and so does Walter, and they both also get mad when no one understands or agrees what their saying. For instance Walter stated, "WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE LISTEN TO ME TODAY". P.70 This shows that Walter gets mad when no one listens to what he says because no one listens to him. So overall, Fences and A Raisin In The Sun are both about Troy and Walter protecting their family, and keeping their family together.
