The infection of smallpox can only occur from person to person. Since this is the case, smallpox is said to be been transmitted by the Spaniards to the Aztecs upon their first interactions. In just 1 year, smallpox was able to tackle 40% of the Aztec population, showing just how intense it's spread can be.

Since the interaction took place from two entirely different worlds, geography severely matters to the result of the disease. While Europeans were fighting smallpox for years, the Aztecs were completely unaware of its existence on the other side of the world. The Aztecs became examples of the relentless nature of smallpox onto a population with no immunity. The Americas, much different that Eurasia, experienced the brutality of smallpox which Europeans were only becoming more and more immune to.

Despite the Aztecs being a well-developed people, smallpox was strive mowing individuals down left and right. With no proper response to the disease, the Aztecs could only hope for the repression of the death toll about to take place after the Spaniards left. The lack of any understanding of how to stop and control such a violent disease was essentially incomprehensible, as the disease spared them no time.
