US Acquisition of Hawaii
The us needed a mid-pacific fueling station for its navy during the Spanish American war, thus naval power was the leading cause of America's acquisition of Hawaii.
The first attempt of Hawaiian annexing, a formal act whereby a state proclaims its sovereignty over territory, was made in the early 1890's but it was met with heavy opposition from the Hawaiian people. The Hawaiian Patriot League lobbied against the annex and stopped it initially. The victory was short lived though. As the Spanish American War began, the issue of annexing Hawaii was brought up once again. The US aimed to annex the Hawaiian islands through Joint Restitution, a process requiring only a simple majority in both houses of Congress. The Joint Restitution passed on July 12, 1898 and the Hawaiian islands were officially annexed by the United States. McKinley's Open Door Policy was in place at the time of the acquisition.
Criticism came from all sides over the annexing of Hawaii, native Hawaiians protested the acquisition and many Americans rallied with them.

Spanish-American War
The Spanish-American War was caused, in part, by America's Militarism, but mainly the White Man's Burden ideology held by many American leaders at the time. American's pitied the situation that the Cuban people were in and felt it was their duty to resolve the ongoing struggles there. Militarism could also be a cause of the war because the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana Harbor was a catalyst in Americans involvement with Cuba.
On April 21, 1898, the US declared war on Spain. The war was the first overseas conflict fought by the US. It was declared a "Splendid little war" as it only lasted 11 days. The Spanish Pacific Fleet was defeated in Manila Bay by a US navy strike.
The presidential policy at the time was McKinley's Open Door Policy.
American criticism against the Spanish-American War was heavy. Anti-imperialists called the US hypocritical for "condemning European empires while pursuing one of its own".

Panamanian Revolt
The Panamanian Revolt took place because of the financial aspect of being able to construct the panama canal.
The United States wanted approval from Columbia to build the panama canal. Columbia asked for more money than the US was willing to pay so the US decided help incite the Panamanian Revolt. Panamanian nationalists got help from the US and were able to separate themselves from Columbia. In exchange for permission to build the canal, the US paid Panama $10 million and an annuity of $250,000 starting nine years later.
President Theodore Roosevelt's infamous Big Stick Diplomacy was in place at the time.
Criticism came from many Americans claiming that Roosevelt's aid in the revolt alienated Latin American countries, he was heavily criticized for "foul-play" and was denounced by many american citizens for his involvement.

The Panama Canal
Money was a large imperial influence behind the creation of the Panama Canal. The US saw the economic opportunities for building the canal and were willing to do anything to make it.
The Panama Canal was completed 1914, it took over ten years to construct and was known as one of the greatest engineering feats of its time. It was constructed after Panama declared its independence from Colombia and granted the US access for the canal. The US built the canal in order to shorten travel by boat and transport goods more efficiently.
The Panama Canal began construction under the influence of Theodore Roosevelt and was made possible by his Big Stick Diplomacy.
Many Americans were critical of the canal because it was viewed as a for-profit venture. The canal was made mainly for its financial regard and many people questioned the necessity of building it.

The Great White Fleet
The voyage of the Great White Fleet was purely made to flaunt America's strong Navy. It was influenced by Naval Power.
President Roosevelt dispatched 16 navy boats on a worldwide circumvention beginning in December of 1907 and ending in February of 1909. The boats visited many harbors and were intended to show both American goodwill, and to display the strength of the US navy. The US wanted to demonstrate that they had become a great sea power in the years following the Spanish-American War. As the fleet visited national ports, thousands of people came to see the ships. The fleet was known as a grand pageant of American Naval Power.
Roosevelt's Big Stick Diplomacy prompted the voyage of the fleet.
Critics of the Great White Fleet insisted that the fleet would incite war, that there was no need for the voyage, and that showing off naval ships could be seen as a taunt to other countries.
