Breakout rooms during my Synchronous Learning Class Meetings is extremely helpful! I am able to pop in and out of these rooms and hear the students talk about the content that was covered or the homework problems assigned. The last two days that I have done this, I have noticed that students are not just sharing answers, but explaining their thought process. This is also another way to break the silence and having 26 kids just look at me with a blank face when we are in a whole group setting.

I believe we need to recognize that students are as overwhelmed as their teachers. Balancing 7 classes in a very different way, often feeling isolated is not an easy task for them or us. We need to remember that they are being expected to do likely more for their classes than before. A zoom, a learning video (or likely two very soon), an assignment, an engagement activity, and so on. I am respecting their time. Once we have done some relationship building and addressed questions/support, I'm giving them the choice to stay in the zoom for more support or get going on their own. Most are getting going--but it's early. I suspect as we move deeper into content, more will stay in the zoom for support. But...that means less time for their work. We all need to recognize the balance of their time among our departments. Other departments need to remember that these kids have SIX other classes.

I'm struggling with having open office hours (a constant zoom link) or by appointment. Right now it is by appointment. Students are wanting immediate 1-1 support. I am encouraging them to reach out to set up an appointment and then we can work together. So far, that is what the majority has indicated they need. As we progress through content, my intention is to set up a zoom support meeting for specific content. I also have a need to utilize my time wisely. Sitting with an open zoom and not having anyone show up--can be frustrating. Students need to learn the professional approach of setting up times with others.

I have been using breakout rooms but I don't think I have been using them as "purposeful" as possible. I usually use them as small group work rooms where I can check in with 3-4 students at a time and see if I can help out in anyway

I am not sure I have any new/great ideas to share. The struggle is real right now to even get kids to engage using ANY method. Camera on, chat, private chat, or actually unmute and talk. I try to start every class with some sort of check in, whether it is using the camera on/off, respond in the chat, or thumbs up/down.
I very much feel like I am teaching to "no one" right now.

I am using breakout rooms in Zoom to have kids discuss/share information about a given topic. I feel like I have to "hustle" from room to room, and usually enter to silence and most cameras off. We have been continuing to talk as classes about zoom protocol and expectations, so I have seen some slight improvements.

I have only had a couple students take me up on office hours on their own. However, when I give feedback to those who are not doing the work correctly, I have started adding things like, "When is a good time for you to meet with me during my office hours?" or "I have office hour openings at 2:00 or 2:30 tomorrow. Which works better for you?". As I have started to ask this as an obvious expectation, I've had more student show up for help.

I sent out a Google Form asking kids to sign up for a "small group" time on Wednesday and for those who take advantage of it, will receive and email and the link to the zoom. I have had several kids sign up, but then nobody joins the zoom. I offer many options for targeted learning, but kids aren't going to them.
