Edwards seems to employ the rhetorical appeal of pathos the most throughout the sermon. He used all three examples such as logos, pathos, and ethos., but the most prominent one is pathos. One example of Logos would be , "Thus it is that natural men are held in the hands of God, over the pit of Hell" this would be Logos, because it is said in many bibles that, as soon as you are born, God can take away your sins, and save you from Hell. An example of Ethos would be "We find it easy to tread on and crush a worm that we see on the earth; so it is easy for us to cut or singe a slender thread that any thing hangs by; thus easy it is for God when he pleases to cast his enemies down to Hell..." this gives the people real world examples of how easy it is to kill something smaller, and weaker than us. This gives his credibility, because everyone in the congregation knows that God is stronger and bigger than them, therefore he is implying the idea that they are the worms who could be crushed at any moment. An example of pathos would be, "Therefore, let every one that is out of Christ, now awake and fly from the wrath to come...." this is giving the people an emotional, and spiritual feeling of waking up and giving back to Christ. The emotion of waking up helps to realize that, they were sleeping on God's mercy and that he is angry with them and need forgiveness.

Jonathan Edwards uses the rhetorical appeal of pathos the most in my opinion. With his words, he puts a lot of meaning and thought, along with tons of emotion to have the reader fully understand what he means. One example I found of this would be "It is everlasting wrath. It would be dreadful to suffer this fierceness and wrath of almighty god one moment; but you must suffer it to all eternity." This brings out the emotion of fear, anger, and an underlying sensation of doom.

An example of Logos would be "Thus it is that natural men are held in the hands of God, over the pit of Hell." An example of Pathos is "this it is that natural men are held in the hand of gd over the pit of hell; they have deserved the fiery pit and are already sentenced to it." An example of ethos is how Edward used his authority about his views on religion.

Edward uses pathos most to get people to listen to him. He does this with very strong language that gets to provoke emotion. He used the phrase the pit is prepared and the fire is ready, he uses this to show that if you sin you WILL go to hell. Edward also uses ethos to show his authority about his stances on religion and he uses logos by stating the bible and his biblical knowedge.

Edwards mostly used the rhetorical appeal of pathos in his writing. He states in the story "Unconverted men walk over the pit of hell on a rotten covering, and there are innumerable places in this covering so weak that they will not bear there weight and these places are not seen." This is pathos because he is telling his people that if they don't live for God and make sure they do not sin, there is already a place in hell waiting for them. This place is one where they are not to be seen again. As a reader during that time period I would be sure to convert to believing in God and not sinning so that I don't end up in hell, or this place that Edwards describes as an eternity of sadness and terror.

He fills his audience with dread and uses their fear to persuade them to change themselves to be righteous in the eyes of God.
Pathos Example : "O sinner! consider the fearful danger you are in: It is a great furnace of wrath, a wide and bottomless pit, full of the fire of wrath, that you are held over in that hand of God..."

Pathos is definitely what Edwards uses the most in his sermon. He makes the gods sound so powerful and the reader so vulnerable. It gives the emotion of fear and despair into the reader. "The bow of gods wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends the arrow at your heart, and strains the bow, and it is nothing but the mere pleasure of god, and that of an angry god, without any promise or obligation at all, that keeps the arrow one moment from being made drunk with your blood¨
