A drainage basin is an area of the land surface from which a river receives its supply of water. The drainage basin can be described as a system, consisting of inputs eg. precipitation, stores eg. aquifers and outputs eg. EVT. The drainage basin can also be considered to be an open system because it allows the movement of energy and matter across its boundaries.

It is considered to be a an open system because it has inputs and outputs where water is lost through evaporation and transpiration. It also allows movement of energy and matter across it's boundaries. Example of an input is precipitation such as rain fall or snow. Output is like the final release of water - river flowing into the the sea - mouth.
