Understanding Appreciative Advising

Appreciative Advising is an intentional collaborative practice focused on providing optimal support for students. By engaging in these six phases fluidly, advisors can build trusting relationships, recognize student strengths, and help them achieve their fullest potential as undergraduates or graduate students.

Building Trust

The Disarm phase emphasizes the establishment of trust and rapport with students. Creating a welcoming environment and genuine first impression is vital. Think about your body language, tone, and overall attitude when you first meet with a student.

Uncovering Strengths

In the Discover phase, the goal is to uncover the student's strengths, skills, and passions. Ask open-ended questions to prompt deeper reflection and self-awareness. The goal of this phase is to BE CURIOUS!

Envisioning the Future

The Dream phase encourages students to envision their future. Help them identify their aspirations and create a vivid picture of their goals. This phase is about thinking big and exploring possibilities without limitations.

Creating an Action Plan

The Design phase involves creating a detailed action plan. Help students outline the steps they need to take to achieve their goals. Break down large tasks into manageable pieces and set deadlines for each step.

Doing the Work

During the Deliver phase, students take action on their plan. Encourage them to stay motivated and resilient as they work towards their goals. Regular check-ins and feedback are crucial during this phase.

Encouraging Excellence
