a. Transitional Topic Sentence: The poem “Mother to Son” is about a loving, wise, and presumably old mother speaking to her young son by telling him of the challenges she had faced as well as the persisting endurance she had displayed plus encouraging her son to surpass the mother’s example by continuing to struggle forward and not to give up when faced with disappointments.

b. Claim: This poem shows the bond between parent and child, which can be referred to as any mother-and-son relationship with a deeply rooted attachment where the mothers, in particular, are representatives associated with selfless love and compassionate wisdom for their child.
c. Evidence (Quote): Hughes was successfully able to create a credible voice and implies a profound depth of experience in his poem with only a few words stating things like “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair” of the poem in “Mother to Son” (Hughes, line 2).
d. Explanation: Here in this line, the author has an understanding of what metaphors to use to describe the pains and obstacles that the mother has endured in her life and how he can apply them in a deeper and emotional connection with her son.

a. Transitional Topic Sentence: The next poem “I, Too” by Hughes talks about him being treated as a second-class citizen who is separated from whites, and despite this discrimination, he still manages to nurture himself where he prepares for the future where the treatment of blacks is no longer disrespected within the United States.
b. Claim: The poem recalls the idea of the mistreatment of blacks and how it shows the optimistic celebrations of personal freedom and idealism with the realities that most black Americans truly faced.
c. Evidence (Quote): The tone that Hughes uses is vital for self-confidence, self-respect, and even the generosity of his assumptions about whites where he writes “ Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table when company comes” in the poem “I, Too” (Hughes, line 8-10).
d. Explanation: This means that in the future whites will finally recognize the merits of blacks where racism will no longer be divided by the color of their skin and everyone will have equality with each other.

a. Transitional Topic Sentence: Finally, the poem “The Dream Keeper” is about dreams and keeping them from the harsh reality that expresses empathy for African Americans in the United States who were not able to achieve their objectives due to the effect of racism.
b. Claim: This includes a widespread lack of opportunity and poverty among the black community in which the goals of those people's dreams or goals get crushed by people who criticized them. Hughes was also a victim of this where people judged him because of his race as an African American.
c. Evidence (Quote): That’s why he used words like “Away from the too-rough fingers of the world” in his poem, “The Dream Keeper” to show how a simple dream can be crushed by society and unfair or injustice in this world is to African Americans (Hughes, line 7-8).
d. Explanation: Even though that is the case, Hughes and many other African Americans still value their dreams, goals, and ambition they strive to believe they will achieve. This poem also has the same strength of meaning and power as it had back then when it was first released to the public.

a. Make an interesting observation: In conclusion, Langston Hughes's work in his poems such as “Mother to Son,” “I, Too,” and “The Dream Keeper” use New Historicism literary theory since it heavily identifies and explains the themes within his writing where the reader can get the idea and sense in his poems. Another reason why it is a New Historicism is that it focuses on the importance of African American culture as the center of his writing and uses that as an influence in how they were treated in society throughout history, especially the experience that Hughes also endured.
b. Restate Thesis: Thence Hughes is known as a famous American poet in the Harlem Renaissance who promoted equality, racism, and injustice in his work as well as showing people how they should treat everyone the right way no matter the race, gender, or religion. The inspiration that Hughes left behind within his work will never be forgotten as long as some also believe in the words that Langston Hughes left within his poems.
